Do any #academicsky friends have experience with Yuja Panorama? My school is integrating it into our LMS starting this winter, and I am simultaneously very supportive of its purpose (checking course materials for accessibility) and very skeptical of ed tech in general. Any tips/warnings/etc?

A good step, but it's absurd that they are resisting having ASL interpreters for all public events. Just another example of the MAGA belief that anyone different is lesser and undeserving. www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5-C...

Re-upping my public pledge not to vote for this racist piece of shit under any circumstances. If it's Newsom vs Trump in 2028, I'm voting third party. Dems, you have *three whole years* to find a non-fascist candidate, I'm sure in a nation of 300 million people you can find one.

1. Stop letting this administration pretend that they just care about undocumented immigrants when they've made their racism obvious.

2. Stop acting like this administration's gestapo tactics would be somehow justified if they really were only targeting undocumented people.
BASH: The vast majority of Somalis in Minnesota are US citizens or legal residents. So why send ICE there?

HOMAN: There's a large illegal Somali community there. There's a large illegal alien community there. If you're a US citizen, you have nothing to fear.

Thoroughly endorse Chuck's recommendation to make your stuffing meatless if you're having any vegans or vegetarians at your holiday meals. You shouldn't be cooking it inside the bird anyway, and it tastes just as good made with veggie stock.

Academic freedom is applicable to anyone with a teaching role. You can’t ask graduate students to teach, advise students, and evaluate student work with granting them academic freedom. The recent debacle at OU and a previous one in the School of Social Work at UT Austin illustrate this.
Pitt’s graduate student union sees bargaining for academic freedom as a “no-brainer.” The university sees it differently: “Graduate students are not faculty members and therefore academic freedom is not applicable.”
Why academic freedom is a heated topic in Pitt grad union negotiations
As the University of Pittsburgh embarks on union negotiations with graduate students, bargaining over the concept of academic freedom has been contentious.

Some truly puke-worthy ableism from the fine folks over at Reason. Having a learning disability or mental health condition does not have anything to do with whether you're "smart" or "promising" or whether you deserve to attend an elite university.

Cutting lines or even whole departments is the frontal assault on higher ed, but another low key war of attrition is the slow accumulation of grinding, meaningless additional tasks concerning syllabus templates, learning outcomes, institutional pablum, and ever more intricate evaluation hoops.

This is the thing; we should be able to analyze accommodations as threatening not only established and well defended hierarchies of ability but also race, gender and class.
What people allegedly worried about ‘too many accommodations’ are really concerned about is the dilution of their privilege
they got there by using a system intended to help able bodied and wealthy white men

they've been getting a lot of accommodations for a very long time

It is this need of early Christians to make him exceptional that begins the slide into shaping the anti Jewish narratives in the gospels. Contemporary Christians will emphasize his Jewishness, but only as an exceptional, model minority Jew.
The way I heard it, his fights with the other Pharisees was part of the gig. You had arguments with your peers over religious practice, interpretations of the Law and so on. He wasn’t exceptional in that regard. Pauline Christianity’s tradition is that he was this lone voice going against the grain.

Imagine if we had a food system based on scientific evidence about the health effects of specific ingredients, instead of how easy it is to pronounce the ingredients.
“He picked up a box of Lunchables...Mr. Chiu struggled to pronounce the ingredients...diglycerides, xanthan gum, calcium propionate..."

🙄 diglycerides are emulsifiers to prevent separation, xanthan gum is a thickener I use all of the time, calcium propionate inhibits the growth of mold & bacteria

I've been teaching politically sensitive topics at a very politically diverse university for 16 years. The key question is always "did you complete the requirements of the assignment."

Expressing your personal views or religious beliefs does not excuse you from having to complete the assignment.

I have zero respect for the "warriors" committing these war crimes. 🖕

I made it through the whole 2000s listening to "but don't you support the troops????" bullshit, so I'm certainly not going to be cowed by a bloviating fartbag like Hegseth.
a lot of words, none of them denying that Hegseth gave an order to kill helpless people who were stranded at sea after he blew up their boats

With ALT. This is legitimately terrifying. This is a MASSIVE escalation of violent anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies.

It’s almost as if they knew unleashing the military into American cities would lead to violence and they were already planning to use that violence to justify this.

I’ve talked before about how AI represents the inevitable outcome of techbros’ lack of distress tolerance for the messy business of relating to and interacting with other human beings

but I think the logical outcome of having that skill issue humored is becoming unable to relate to yourself, either
there's "lazy" and there's "not wanting to exist as a person in any meaningful sense" and a lot of sloppers are careening towards the latter category, if not already in it
