The march is now passing the Chicago city hall / Cook County hall building. The chant goes up,

"Minnesota don't you fear, we, the people, are right here"

A windchill of around -30F didn’t stop what organizers say was 50,000 from marching through Minneapolis in one of, if not the largest, march in Minnesota history.

Protesters demand accountability in the killing of Renee Good and removal of the federal agents that have upended daily life in MN.

actual self-accountability demands more than acknowledgement of bad judgement or ideas. you have to also take affirmative action to address the terrible things you said and did. you have to do that with no expectations that people you harmed will ever accept or certainly forgive you.

So working as designed then.
I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

DS9 is like pizza: even when it's bad it's still pretty good.
There's been a lot of bad Star Trek over the years, there's been some decisions here to lean into that vibe. I feel like we should have just kept making DS9 and never stopped doing that

I'm in my mid-50s. I started organizing against the violence of policing when I was a teenager. I've heard ALL of the so-called "reform" proposals. They are the SAME ONES that liberals are offering in 2026. Cops have never killed more people in my lifetime.

Gotta do something different.

36 people have died at ICE's hands in the past year

may of these deaths did not happen on camera, but it does not make them any less horrifying and unacceptable

this is a list of their names, where they lived before being abducted, and a link to crowdfunding if i can find it

I received a thank you from some library workers for this piece after a Chicago city budget was passed this week without the previously proposed library cuts I described here. Many thanks to everyone who made noise about this issue. There were wins and losses in this budget, but this win matters.

Often one of the most supportive things someone can do for a CPTSD survivor is patiently sit w/ them as they take their time finding their words through the haze of dissociation & internal "noise," staying open & gently attentive, not pressuring the conversation forward.

I see some folks responding to my piece with "fuck Brandon Johnson" type comments, and I fully understand, but also, he still has time to make this right. We need to demand that he become a champion of our public libraries. We need to demand that of every member of the city council. Now is the time!

Everyone in Chicago needs to read this AND TAKE ACTION. Everyone else should read this and ask what's happening where you are with your public library systems.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed disastrous cuts to our city's libraries while setting aside $5M for a ShotSpotter replacement. As library associate Sara Heymann told me, “Libraries embody everything we need to fight back against fascism.” My piece on what’s at stake and how to fight back:

I can't stress enough that you should take every opportunity that comes your way to support your local public libraries. Many of them are currently struggling and are being DEFUNDED. Local action matters on this front. Don't sit back until those libraries are gone before taking ACTION.

You're not struggling to feel better because you'e "bad" or "not trying hard enough." You're struggling because you've been injured, & that injury has been reinforced for years. Healing psychological wounds is complex. You're not "doing it wrong."

Easy does it. Patience. Grace.

A few weeks ago I zoomed with a group of high school students and their adult mentor to discuss taking social action. I am thrilled to report that this group of 10 students raised $10,000 in two weeks to support their local food pantry. They sent me a photo and it has them all jumping and I tear up.

ICE is in Edgewater. Stay safe if you’re vulnerable on the far North Side. They’ve already been run off with whistles at least once today. Patrolling matters. That’s what I’m doing.

Honestly, I don't care what people seeking assistance at food banks do for a living, whether they work or not, what they drive, etc.

People are hungry. Give them food to eat. Plain and simple.

"What I need you to understand is that nobody is letting them go quietly. The Feds' every movement is announced by a chorus of whistles, by a parade of cars honking in their wake, neighbors rushing outside to yell to film to witness.... Neighbors running towards trouble."
ICE has been cracking down hard across the vast expanse of the greater Chicago area, and I wrote a little bit about what you need to understand about what it’s like here now. Plus, I compiled some resources for locals to get alerts and whistles. dansinker.com/posts/202…
