book is absolutely lovely so far, but this little section stood out to me.

"Drivers and pedestrians said they typically broke laws to save time. Cyclists, however, said they typically broke laws to stay safe."

ridiculously true. at no point on my bike do i think about The Law. i think about safety

not sure how to square ‘no one person can be reasonably expected to pay for every media subscription’ with ‘sorely underpaid writers need to make a living’ but my inclination is not to locate that problem with any of the broke ass people on either end of the complaint

Really happy with the Portland city councilors who voted to ban AI price fixing, pass the detention fee ordinance, and start the pricess for a human rights screen on city investments.

There’s a lot of noise and bullshit out there, but these folks are governing with their values.

"Many garment workers make Nike products for below $1 per hour ... If Nike had returned the $18 billion it is spending on buybacks to workers instead, it could offer a $125 per month raise to every garment worker who makes Nike products for 10 years — doubling the wages of many."

How to tell if you have morphed into a liberal:

- he is playing 4D chess!
- he has to be nice to reactionaries to accomplish his goals
- if you’re so smart why don’t you run a communist and win
- ok well where is the revolution if that’s your strategy
- real socialism will never happen here

An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

In Oregon we know this in our bones
a Republican hasn't won this district since 1949, there is no freakier form of Republican than a Republican in a district they will not win.
Watched again and the highlight may actually be her saying if Kat was nicer, she'd have called Trump to ask for lenience. Not great imo how fast people have learned "the president will pardon you if you suck up to him."

A thought experiment especially for Americans:
If a genie provided bus service everywhere, on plausible bus routes not point to point, most drivers would keep driving.
If a genie made cars disappear, American roads would be full of pedestrians, cyclists, and people using other mobility devices.
Yet another evidence review argues very strongly that simply providing alternatives to driving doesn't reduce driving

This isn't surprising, if only thanks to habit. If I unthinkingly jump in my car for every trip (as many do), new buses won't change that
