What happens when ChatGPT cites to a real case but misstates what the case stands for?

That doesn't fly for Judge Behm in Michigan.

The court says that while a litigant could make the same error based on faulty reasoning, LLMs can't, because they can't reason.

And while a litigant might get away with similar overstatements because they could, perhaps, reason their way to showing how a case's stated holding might extend to novel situations, an LLM does not reason in the way a litigant must. To put it in a slightly different way, LLMs do not perform the metacognitive processes that are necessary to comply with Rule 11.

When an LLM overstates a holding of a case, it is just piecing together a plausible-looking sentence

Die Vorstellung von Fußballprofis durch ihre neuen Klubs, im Fachjargon „Präsentation“ genannt, ist nur selten originell. Wobei: Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regel. In den achtziger Jahren zum Beispiel landete der brasilianische Mittelfeldspieler Sócrates in Italien, und als er befragt wurde, welche die besten italienischen Spieler seien, antwortete er einerseits, dass er derer nicht so viele kenne, und dass ihn dies, andererseits, nicht weiter kümmere. Denn: „Ich möchte hier vor allem Gramsci im Original lesen und die Geschichte der italienischen Arbeiterklasse studieren.“

#Palantir auf Steroiden? Der Landtag NRW will heute beschließen, dass die Software auch mit KI genutzt werden darf (bisher nicht) – das führt zu noch mehr Intransparenz und Diskriminierungrisiken. Außerdem sollen Echtdaten der Polizei über die Bevölkerung zum Trainieren von KI genutzt werden dürfen.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!
