Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

I worked for a big academic publisher and right before I quit they stopped copyediting/proofreading to cut costs. The editors are acquisitions editors; they are not checking citations, and there's no one down-chain to do it in most cases. That's how you get slop citations.
Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

NEW: A report found that a significant number of kids and teens are using AI companions.

More striking: themes of violence — which can include sexual violence — drove more engagement among young users than any other type of content, according to the report.

I want my AI minister to talk about the desperate need we have for regulation, and to talk about safety in an era where chatbots are literally encouraging suicide and other harmful behaviour, but I guess that's not what we're getting. . .
Q: What does obsession with AI say about us?

A: This is human curiosity. Sumerians invented cuneiform. Egyptians engineered things. This isn’t new: better tools to do bigger things. Better tools have unanticipated consequences. Sometimes the club to kill a bear becomes the club to kill a neighbour.

To be 'fair' the Amazon AI can't lie. As Henry Frankfurt argues, lying entails knowing the truth and intentionally hiding it from others in order to deceive them. AI doesn't do that. It bullshits. It doesn't know or care what the truth is. It just spouts stuff that sounds good.
