Bloomberg research found wholesale electricity up ~270% in areas near data centers

It doesn't seem like nearly enough people are taking it seriously

One A.I. image isn't too much energy, but 5 million videos? Per day/hour/minute whatever. It's not sustainable

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

the point is education as a class-marker, you respect it as a shibboleth of someone you're supposed to recognise is in the same club as you or else tug your forelock to but that is precisely the reason it should not be available to the lower orders

We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving."

Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.
Event study coefficients that show that men's earnings rise more than women's among couples following a cross-commuting zone move (left panels). The pattern is muted or reverses among single men and single women (right panels).

the extremely boring and simple and “we told you so” explanation is the post financial crisis austerity binge in which european institutions declared fiscal ‘discipline’ more important than democracy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If politics are going crazy in several European countries one after the other, I think it is time to go past blaming the failures of individual political actors (and there are quite a few, both in the UK and France) to looking at the systemic pressures our political systems are failing to deal with.

If you are overly focused on the admittedly increasingly batsh*t character of British politics, don‘t neglect the batsh*t character of French politics.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

it's pretty wild to be doing "stop being racist to my computer friend" discourse when the forces of Actual Racism are totally ascendant in government and inventing new ways to arrest people for their skin color every day

Microsoft shoved their AI Copilot into everything in Windows 11. Which lead to an increase in Windows 10 use. So they announced they'd stop support for Windows 10, but its usage was still strong. So they started to put Copilot into Windows 10.

Windows 7 use is surging 5x now.

AI is product poison.

professional secret: vikings didn't exist. medievalists invented them in 1968 in the wake of the first wave of Tolkienmania to trick people into spending their careers reading saints' lives and homily books

But can one reliably analyze ht antennas with a VNA? I was under the impression that the user and the radio basically make the counterpoise of the whole antenna system

The way ICE agents wreak havoc on buildings, take perverse pleasure in doing so, and then lie about everything afterwards is akin to the videos of IDF soldiers wrecking residential complexes in Gaza, and there’s a lot to unpack all around there.

Some schools will be starved of resources. Other schools will be offered bribes. The end goal is the same. To make the universities an extension of the Trump administration. Shame on any of these institutions willing to take the bribes.
Letters on Wednesday were going out to solicit agreement and feedback from Vanderbilt University, Dartmouth College, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas, the University of Arizona, Brown University and the University of Virginia, according to an administration official.

today i learned dorothy thompson was dragging trumpy tradwives in 19-hundred-and-fucking-41 in Harper's, the same magazine which would 79 years later publish a letter decrying precisely this kind of drag as illiberal cancel culture
A screenshot from a 1941 Dorothy Thompson piece for Harper's reads: 'Mrs. E would go Nazi as sure as you are born. That statement surprises you? Mrs. E seems so sweet, so clinging, so cowed. She is. She is a masochist. She is married to a man who never ceases to humiliate her, to lord it over her, to treat her with less consideration than he does his dogs. He is a prominent scientist, and Mrs. E, who married him very young, has persuaded herself that he is a genius, and that there is something of superior womanliness in her utter lack of pride, in her doglike devotion. She speaks disapprovingly of other “masculine” or insufficiently devoted wives. Her husband, however, is bored to death with her. He neglects her completely and she is looking for someone else before whom to pour her ecstatic self-abasement. She will titillate with pleased excitement to the first popular hero who proclaims the basic subordination of women."
