All the kids are doing heroin, so it only makes sense that teachers do it too
We know students, like the rest of the world, are using AI. Teachers need to be equipped to deal w/all the issues AI creates. Our approach starts with maximizing safety & privacy and empowering educators to make educational decisions, so AI tools can benefit not harm www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
AI has become the norm for students. Teachers are playing catch-up.
At a New York City training session, educators explored how artificial intelligence could support teaching while also discussing their concerns around the technology.

A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

I cannot roll my eyes hard enough. They "escaped" the horrors of secular Dutch society where they had religious freedom but had to exist with others.
“This voyage and survival were undertaken for yet a further purpose: to escape the religious persecution they experienced at home, escape to a new land—a new world—of religious liberty. It is for this they were giving thanks in this first American Thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving, Above All, Celebrates Our Escape From a Pre-Liberal World
But the liberal order's very success in overcoming the horrors of that world has made postliberal ideologies forget what lies on its other side

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Holy cats, I'm kind of shocked to see I'm on this list. I'd file for $1 just on principle...

I get this a lot too. I don't use ChatGPT or any LLMs in my work because I want my writing to sound like me, not like the averaged-out voice of the internet. But also, writing is thinking, and thinking is a habit. I don't want to get out of that habit.
A friend recently texted me the same thing. “Do you really not use ChatGPT?!” It was a sign of where we are culturally on this. People are compelled to use it but also starting to question the normalcy?
Recently met someone who was very surprised to hear I didn’t use ChatGPT or any LLM.

I said my job depended on doing distinctive work. That was my selling point. If I started to sound like ChatGPT and turn out what it did, then how on earth could I justify doing it? What would that make me?

Quick quiz -- which president made food stamps into a massive national program?
Trump on food stamp recipients: "It wasn't meant for people that could do whatever they want. The people that say, 'Well, I don't think I'll work. I'll just collect this money.'"

If I were running the DNC, there would be Democratic Party sponsored food relief banks across the country right now that specifically welcomed anyone regardless of party affiliation.

Along with the food, there could be voter registration and links to runforsomething.net

I think it’s hard for outsiders to grasp how low staff and faculty morale get at universities where everyone’s job gets worse every year because there’s a hiring freeze and program cuts and any real money is locked up in new projects meant to help higher admin shine so they can move somewhere better
I’m not looking at colleges with my kids for some years yet but the question about staffing in particular is one I think every parent should ask

Meet Shakira. Ten years ago, she was living in a shelter with her three kids, working at a non-union hotel.

Now she's a member of HTC.

Unions are how working people can build a dignified life. But in a city as expensive as ours, they need local government on their side.
