January 6 was like a much dumber version of Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch and yet a plurality of American voters were like, Yeah, let’s give that guy the nuke codes again. An absolutely world historical debacle of societal ignorance. I’ll never understand it.

Bernie Sanders
QUESTION: If you could have any living person as the democratically chosen leader of your country, who would you choose?

Doesn’t have to be a politician.

Explain why, with the characteristics they have.

If I were a US voter, I’d chose Stephen Colbert. Character, morality, intelligence, humour.

When I lived close enough to walk to school as a kid, it was against policy to walk there. They literally would not allow me to walk to school.

This isn't just on parents, this is a deliberate policy choice.
This is obviously a, ah, provocative take on the subject, but it indeed an enormous societal problem that children have stopped walking or biking to school. There are plenty of individually rational reasons parents might drive their kids to school, but, in a wider context, no good reasons.

Local officials responded quickly and are working on repairs to the levee breach from this morning in King County.

No one was injured, the evacuation area has been refined to a smaller area, and we're expecting the repairs to take several hours. Check KCemergency.com for updates.

This is for residents and businesses east of the green river in the Orillia area in Tukwila, Renton and Kent.
Due to breach in the Desimone Levee, this area is under a GO NOW evacuation notice. Leave immediately if you are in this area.

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

Yakima's Interurban is in DANGER.

A long battle has been going on between the city, its people, & the RR about how to keep this operation running.

Do your part to help save it for future generations.

If you're in the region, there's a council meeting on 1/20/26.

My bro sent me some pics of downtown Sultan, WA this evening from a canoe! Flood waters slowly creeping up from the Skykomish river. Fortunately his house is about 30ft above the river, but I feel bad for the folks stacking sandbags this evening.

The funniest thing is that I bought some pears for the first time at least a decade right before I saw the fake ad in The Onion. It's like they knew!
Welp, looks like we're teaching the LinkedIn grindset people what The Onion is the hard way.

I'm glad Saka voted against the SPOG contract. Too bad he also voted for:
-his own resolution declaring "Defund is Dead"
-defunded bus service to pay for a transit cop czar
-voted for the 23% SPD pay bump last year
-relegalizing blast balls and other crowd control weapons

Reason 1001 why billionaires can't be trusted
something you have to understand about Trump & his weird comments about the economy is that the dude hasn't paid for anything like a normal person in decades - never pumps gas, never buys groceries - so he's completely & utterly out of touch with what life is like for most of us
