Sometimes corporate malfeasance makes shit expensive. Sometimes complicated regulatory regimes make shit expensive. Sometimes markets literally cannot provide a good (trains/ health care) so the state should take over. It’s a case by case thing. People want there a universal rule but there never is.

So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here
With astonishing speed, the administration has toppled the most cherished pillars of a free society. And the experts agree: It’s all going to get much, much worse.

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

brother if you think homogeneity = dynamism, let me tell you about china before 1912.

shit, before the 1950s even, not like they’ve gone through a civil war way more recently than us!!!
I got this comment in response to a post on X and it just made me think that a lot of these reactionaries just have no idea about even the basics of American history, and have been fed a false and rosy nostalgic view of things in the honestly recent past.

/also the comment about China is dumb.

I think there's a lot to this but honestly in my opinion the underlying dynamic that makes Zohran friendly to YIMBY orgs is just that he's heard the case for increased housing supply and agrees with it
One big takeaway from Mamdani bringing YIMBYs into his transition is that advocates can often gain a lot of power by

1.) having useful answers to questions and accurate information

2.) being reasonably polite and pleasant to elected officials

3.) understanding the actual mechanics of government

if you are a person of color, you know this phenomenon all too well.

a white man or woman will describe a situation or environment as diverse, think of a classroom, a neighborhood, etc. you ask them to name them or point them out, and their brain malfunctions bc it's literally only one POC.
There's really interesting social science on how white people significantly overestimate the number of people of color in a room or in a picture. A room with, like, 20% POC will be perceived as majority POC.
White men are 30% of the US and if they look around the room and see it’s less than 90% white men they think it’s affirmative action.
