Due to a new bill signed by NC Governor Josh Stein (a Democrat), the moratorium on our state's death penalties has been ended and may now proceed via *any* method. Welcome back, barbarity.

In the book, my essay “The False Evolution of Execution Methods” will be accompanied by a new essay by Lyle May. May interrogates capital punishment from his singular perspective; he has been incarcerated on North Carolina’s death row for over twenty years.

Wait, I'm sorry: WHAT tf is happening? Is Bsky Trust & Safety actually saying that they don't provide input on the 3rd party "AI" that is the 1st tier of all image & video moderation on this website? Am I actually reading that right? Because that seems like a completely bananas way to run a railroad

That last one is an edited photo, though, so what we do have are two instances of probably-the-same-guy.

Source below.

The original, un-edited picture from an AP article about ISIS, showing a man in white, hiding his face with a kufyiah, with a chest rig for ammo and a kalshnikov as well as a pistol visible in the back left. The eye region is clearly different from the supposed "Gaza Actor" while the head scarf remains the same.

If your considered analysis is that everyone has gone completely mad except for you, then is it likely that’s what happened? Or is it you that is the arse here.

We buried my grandmother this weekend and I would say talk to anyone in your life you’ll be responsible for when they die about what they want the end of their life and their memorial and burial to be like. My dad took extremely good care of his mom and it made everything a lot easier.

an unfortunate irony about this post - and even if you are the staunchest anti-ai critic out there, i think you'd agree - is that some of the most bigoted things are being said to respond to this. copy/pasting phrasing and terminology used by bigots but replacing "dna" with "bits" doesn't make it ok

i'm completely serious when i say that much of the dismissive ai discourse on here fires the bigotry neuron

if you're writing a sentence that sounds like eugenics but you go "oh that's fine to say because it's not a real person" (whatever that means) you may want to consider what made you okay with saying that

Pritzker needs to take some sort of demonstrative action against this. But nothing he does will stop this.

Still, liberal voters and elected leaders are confronted by the fact that the police are not democratically accountable. They have no interest in protecting you or your rights from the feds.

Discworld QOTD, from Jingo
‘This belonged to my great-granddad,’ he said. ‘He was in the scrap we had against Pseudopolis and my great-gran gave him this book of prayer for soldiers, ‘cos you need all the prayers you can get, believe you me, and he stuck it in the top pocket of his jerkin, ‘cos he couldn’t afford armour, and next day in battle - whoosh, this arrow came out of nowhere, wham, straight into this book and it went all the way through to the last page before stopping, look, you can see the hole.’
‘Pretty miraculous,’ Carrot agreed.
‘Yeah, it was, I s’pose,’ said the sergeant. He looked ruefully at the battered volume. ‘Shame about the other seventeen arrows, really.’ (J)

This is another 10,000 word opus - I break down the entirety of OpenAI's finances, and explain that they're just another boring AI startup trying to build products on top of their models.

Sora 2 is a mirage - an unsustainable marketing tool.

Anyway, subscribe at the discount link below.
OpenAI Is A Boring AI Startup Making Novelty Products That Lose Billions Of Dollars
One argument against this piece is that Sora itself represents a kind of innovation, when the truth is that it’s the result of infrastructure and theft. While there is some innovation with regards to post-training and the actual model itself, OpenAI’s moat is that they have the largest amount of available AI compute in the world and the resources to train massive models.

They also intend to release the Sora 2 API, though it’s unclear how much it’ll cost (other than the fact it’ll be very, very expensive) and who might use it.

In any case, OpenAI is kind of proving my point. Sora 2 is free - it doesn’t drive any revenue unless you consider the knock-on effects of people paying to access it, except you don’t get access to Sora 2 by paying for ChatGPT Plus, and still have to wait in line like everybody else. While theoretically opening up signups might increase the revenue driven by this product, it is still fundamentally a very expensive viral marketing tool, and every user it attracts is a chance to burn whatever revenue they may or may not bring in.

And that, fundamentally, is the problem OpenAI faces. Even with a “viral hit” (if you can call it that) like Sora 2, one that’s got the entire tech industry talking, they still haven’t found a way to make a product people like or will actually pay for.

The Sora 2 app is a clunky, ugly feed of slop, its generations unreliable and expensive, interesting not based on value or utility, but in the novelty of making something that sort-of-kind-of looks real, not that you can actually do anything with it as a result.

OpenAI, just like its API customers, is stuck trying to work out how to make products that people want and will pay for, let alone enough to cover their horrifying costs.

Sora 2 is legally-questionable, financially-reckless, and a terrifying act of desperation by a company that already spent at least $2.60 to make $1 in the…

There is a complete absence of any evidence here for this set of assertions that the median voter feels they would be called racist when Nigel Farage is called racist (or, in this case, when Farage isn't called racist but jumps up to claim that he has been)
