I had an absolute blast at the NorCal/Northern Nevada Geomorphology Symposium this past weekend in Yosemite Valley! Who knew camping for conference lodging could be so fun! Many thanks to the organizers for making this happen in such a beautiful part of the world
Scientific poster session in an open room – people are standing and talking in front of various posters around the room perimeter. Projector screen at the far end of the room reads "Geomorphology Symposium". Group of people are gathered along the sandy bank of the Merced River. Two volunteers are holding up a poster while the presenter speaks to the rest of the group. Behind the poster and presenter is Yosemite Falls.

Simultaneously heartbroken and inspired to witness what's unfolding in my former hometown this week. On one side are the horrific accounts of abductions and abuse amid this unconstitutional invasion and occupation, and on the other are incredible stories of community solidarity. Bear down, Chicago.

Russia took less than 1% of Ukraine since Nov 2023. Only cost them at least half a million soldiers.

I think people seriously underestimate what it means to say that the Supreme Court is “illegitimate”, and what the consequences of saying it (and meaning it) are.

This whole thread is awesome, and only *slightly* dimmed by my initial, incorrect assumption that this first picture was an artistic installation of a Minecraft spawner.

Elon Musk said he was going to cut spending by $2 trillion dollars, but instead spending is higher this year than we thought it would be before Trump took office. Truly incredible stuff.

CBO fy2025 projections for deficit/spending/etc are out

Some issues make simple comparisons apples-to-oranges, so I'll do apples-to-apples & explain in the thread

Relative to pre-Trump projections:
-Primary deficits ⬆️ $34 bn
-program spending ⬆️ $97 bn
-revenues ⬆️ $63 bn

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
mattcameron.bsky.social
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.
"Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians not directly taking part in hostilities, even if they are believed to be smuggling drugs."

At one point a major tension is explicit: Charlamagne tha God says she’s too scripted but she says she has to be disciplined and repeat herself to get her message across, meanwhile Trump can pop off about electric sharks.

I’m not sure elite party leaders have internalized attention > repeatability.

Eboni (Ebony?) Watson sure sounds like a hero:

‘As Watson questioned agents about warrants and the legality of their raid, neighbors pleaded with her to be quiet for her own safety. She refused to back down.
"You claim you have warrants, but do you have a warrant to seize the entire building?”’
Eboni Watson, a neighborhood resident who filmed the hours-long raid of the apartment building, told the Weekly she had just gone to bed and closed her eyes when she heard a loud
'bang', followed by the distinct buzzing of drones, a sound she had come to recognize after noticing them hovering near her home for the past three or four weeks.
A moment later, Watson's phone lit up with a notification from the Citizen app that said there'd been a car accident outside. The buzzing grew louder. She grabbed the phone and got out of bed to look out the window.
southsideweekly.com As Watson questioned agents about warrants and the legality of their raid, neighbors pleaded with her to be quiet for her own safety. She refused to back down.
"You claim you have warrants, but do you have a warrant to seize the entire building?" she asked the agents. "Do you have warrants to detain the entire building?" According to Watson, two federal agents told her that they were taking all detainees' photos to check them against databases for visas or warrants. When Watson walked around the block to capture footage of the ongoing raid, she noticed federal agents were using the parking lots of Excel South Shore Academy—a CPS contractor school-to load residents into vans. In them, Watson saw Black U.S. citizens, women, and children. Grabbed from their beds, they hadn't been allowed to dress themselves before they were zip-tied and brought down to the waiting vans.

I'm exceedingly grossed out by @wired.com 's insane "coverage" of this ad blitz. How much more would I need to pay on my sub to NOT get the Wired/Amazon emails?
