A lot of wisdom being dropped here about deescalation. At artful protests I organized in the early 2010s, where people showed up expecting a family-friendly vibe, we sometimes had folks who were bloc'd up who I had to talk to. They always heard me out because we had mutual respect. They knew me.
And if you realize you are out of your depth, you call someone over who CAN be nonreactive and calm and de-escalatory, or someone who is simply a more trusted messenger.
It doesn't matter if it's black bloc or some guy who's off his meds.

once you think of people as just a resource to manipulate, as things to have power over - not as kin you have things in common with, people you form meaningful relationships with - abuse is something inevitable that stems from this.
