People with type 1 diabetes #T1D can sometimes seem aloof and unapproachable. I want to let you know it isn't because we know we are so hot (we do), it is because we are really busy trying to stop our bodies from killing us.

This is the lie at the center of the "demographic crisis" framing. In the US, per worker productivity has tripled since the 1960s. But instead of increasing compensation or various forms of dependent care, this **enormous** new surplus goes to private profits, asset inflation, and rent extraction...
brandontbishop.bsky.social
People really don't like do deal with US labor productivity being *vastly* larger than even a couple generations ago.
US labor productivity and real hourly compensation from 1973 to 2024 both increase steadily.

if your perspective is being challenged by the rantings and ravings of bari weiss then you might just be fucking stupid i’m sorry you had to find out this way
amywestervelt.bsky.social
There are too many rich white people who've had no challenges in life working in media...is a thought I had when one of them was saying recently they appreciate how Bari Weiss challenges their perspective. Babe, most folks don't need that, it doesn't make you open-minded and intellectually curious.

🥴

I understand why people *want* the police to intervene--normies are like, 'I thought cops are supposed to arrest people doing crimes, ICE is right there doing crimes, go do your thing'

but police organizations take nearly every opportunity to be like, 'oh you misunderstood what our thing is'

People needn't worry about our former Premier here, one of her big scandals was failing to disclose her part in a $31 million dollar property deal apparently because she sort of forgot about it
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
I meant to say epidemiology studies here not trials
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
I'll say it we definitely don't need anymore nutritional epidemiology trials looking at non-nutritive sweeteners, we need good long clinical trials (but honestly we have way more pressing and better ways to spend the research dollars if you really want to think about it)
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
I know lots of people who do nutritional epidemiology probably don't want to hear this, but maybe pump the breaks on the whole field, because it is such a mess. Especially now that "AI" can whip up a paper from an available data set in minutes
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
Isn't it more likely there is something about these sugar or non-sugar sweetened beverage drinkers that is driving the majority of this risk? Because calories seem to only add up to 10% difference in risk, maybe it is other ingredients, or more likely shared other exposures that are co-linear
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
Also why is the jump here that the non-nutritive sweeteners are the reason for the increased risk (via hand wavy guy microbiome mechanisms) when the risk between sugar and non-sugar sweetened beverages is almost the same
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
Please do not say "actually linked" when you are trying to translate an association based on nutritional epidemiology
"Our study shows that low- or non-sugar-sweetened beverages were actually linked to a higher risk of (fatty liver disease), even at modest intake levels such as a single can per day,” Liu said.
dylanmackayphd.bsky.social
Can we please stop with these kinds of studies and this kind of language and these kind of stories. 24-hour dietary recalls (and really all our methods for dietary intake used in epidemiology) need to be used cautiously and humbly, recognizing the huge limitations

Both Diet And Sugary Drinks Increase Fatty Liver Disease Risk, Study Says
TUESDAY, Oct. 7, 2025 (HealthDay News) — People could be at higher risk of fatty liver disease from both sugary sodas and diet drinks, a new study says.In fact,

Premature closure is close tie to analysis- paralysis and therapeutic inertia as cause for bad medical decision making. In an attempt to address the last two , AI deployment in the medical space will exacerbate the former as no one will take a few moments to fact check the AI.

When papers are the currency for promotion and "methods" are viewed as a hindrance by so many scientists, people churning out pointless surveys of fake participants will "outperform" scientists doing trials, ethnography, etc. LLMs will further erode this - why even pretend to read widely?
dingdingpeng.the100.ci
I really strongly feel that some fields of research would profit if researchers stopped collecting online data for some time and instead maybe just read a bit outside of their field.
The ‘harm hypothesis’ strikes me as being deeply rooted in contemporary WEIRD values rather than being the result of a specific ‘evolved’ or ‘innate’ instinct or psychological mechanism. And indeed the literature cited to support it seems to suggest this.

Costello & Acerbi cite 5 papers in the paragraph above to support the model:

Stewart-Williams et al., 2024: the sample here consists of Prolific users mostly in the UK.

FeldmanHall et al., 2016: the samples were MTurk users in the US and volunteers in the UK.

Curry et al., 2004: the sample is convicted offenders in Texas in 1991.

Graso et al., 2023: US MTurk users again.

Graso & Reynolds, 2024: this is a review paper which does make some cross-cultural claims, but when you check the references you can see some important limitations. For example, they write that “Across cultures, women were perceived as less powerful than men but were seen more positively,” and when you check the reference it goes to Glick et al., 2004, which samples from 16 nations. However, when you read that paper they note in the methods that, “Most samples consisted primarily of college students participating for extra credit.”

A life update: this wound up paying off. I'm still applying to several jobs that are hopefully careers, but I've got my survival needs covered by a job at the airport that I'm apparently pretty good at.

And instead of being in an office alone, which was driving me mad, I see 20k people a day.

Friendly reminder that it didn’t all begin on 7 October 2023.

It began with the Balfour Declaration of 1917, the Nakba since 1948, the Six-Day War of 1967, the full blockade of Gaza since 2007, and so much more.

The genocide in Palestine is the culmination of racism and settler colonialism.
