News Team, Thank you for the notes and texts. I apologize for not reaching out earlier. I learned on Saturday that Bari Weiss spiked our story, INSIDE CECOT, which was supposed to air tonight. We (Ori and I) asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy/opportunity. Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now-after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one. We requested responses to questions and/or interviews with DHS, the White House, and the State Department. Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story. If the administration's refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a "kill switch" for any reporting they find inconvenient. If the standard for airing a story becomes "the government must agree to be interviewed," then the government effectively gains control over the 60 Minutes broadcast. We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state. These men risked their lives to speak with us. We have a moral and professional obligation to the sources who entrusted us with their stories. Abandoning them now is a betrayal of the most basic tenet of journalism: giving voice to the voiceless. CBS spiked the Jeffrey Wigand interview due to legal concerns, nearly destroying the credibility of this broadcast. It took years to recover from that "low point." By pulling this story to shield an administration, we are repeating that history, but for political optics rather than legal ones. We have been promoting this story on social media for days. Our viewers are expecting it. When it fails to air without a credible explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship. We are trading 50 years of "Gold Standard" reputation for a single week of political quiet. I care too much about this broadcast to watch it be dismantled without a fight. Sharyn

I got this picture by TOTAL accident. Mambo was standing up on his back legs sniffing the tree and I thought "What a cute shot!" JUST as I took the picture, Flamenco popped out from behind the tunnel and startled him, and he took flight. It's a much clearer picture than it has any right to be.

ICE issued a $29.9 million contract to Kpb Services LLC on Nov. 28 for "due diligence services and concept design for processing centers and mega centers throughout the United States." The contract, which fell just below the $30 million threshold requiring the government to justify why it didn't allow for competition, is part of the broader effort to use existing warehouses for immigration detention, according to two people familiar with the matter. NBC News reported last month that the Trump administration was looking to buy warehouses for immigration detention. The Department of Homeland Security and ICE didn't respond to an emailed request for comment. Kpb was a joint venture between an LLC affiliated with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and SK2 LLC, a company started by two business partners who have been vying for detention business, according to two people with direct knowledge of the arrangement. On Wednesday, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation said it had fully divested from the ICE contract - five days after a tribal leader initially addressed backlash to the contract. "I am sick to my stomach and frankly heartbroken that members of our Nation put economic development - though it is sorely needed - above our moral obligations to other persecuted people," Joseph "Zeke" Rupnick, the tribal council's chairman, said in a statement at the time. It's unclear whether SK2 will bring on another partner or operate independently moving forward. When reached by phone before Prairie Band's departure, SK2 co-founder Steven Kelley declined to comment on the status of their work or who their partners were, though he said they had "many partners." He declined further comment when reached again before publication. Kelley sold his government contracting business, J&J Worldwide Services, to real estate giant CBRE in 2024. Earlier this year, Kelley proposed that CBRE and J&J work with the Trump administration on its immigration detention expansion, but the company's leadership rejected the plans, according to two people familiar with the matter. Kelley left J&J in August. CBRE didn't respond to emailed requests for comment. Kelley worked with SK2's other founder, Scott King, when King was at King & George, another government contractor. King & George said earlier this week that Scott King is "no longer affiliated with the company."
