I hope everybody is noticing that public and private universities all over the country are dismantling religious studies programs as white christian nationalists are ascendant in all levels of our government
A massive attack on several humanities units (Arabic Studies, Judaic Studies, Holocaust Studies, Classics, Religion, German & Scandinavian, Russian/East European/Eurasian Studies) *and* tenure now unfolding at the University of Oregon (a blue state!). Closure of units and faculty layoffs threatened.

as a text-based creature in an increasingly video-first world I'd like to be cherished as a sort of charismatic but doomed animal, to be fed treats in my enclosure until I meet my inevitable demise, after which my taxidermied corpse might greet visitors in a lobby somewhere

If I could do one thing on a curriculum basis to American high education, it would be to ban undergraduate business majors. It wouldn’t fix everything. But it would fix a lot.
I’ve now had 3-4 exchanges with business profs who seem baffled that humanities profs are resisting their assertions that AI can teach our courses and AI can replicate our work.

They all seemed quite shocked that “you don’t matter and this machine will replace you” isn’t a winning sales pitch.

Say it with us—a library loan is not a lost sale! 📚
Library purchases are purchases. They pay the press. The press counts them towards advances and royalties. And (gasp) the book is in a library!! It’s wonderful and no one should ever feel bad about getting a book through a library instead of buying it.
I got it from my local library system, which has 28 physical copies (more than half are checked out) and 4 audiobooks. The branch library is two blocks from my house so I get most of my books from there. Hope this helps because I loved the book - I'm not a historian and knew nothing of that period.

Private company buys a public good. A few years go by and the company decides the public good is no longer worthwhile; the public suffers as a result.

This story arc is way too common in modern society.

Whenever you see one of these stories you learn: it was acquired by private equity, it took on debt to pay the new owners dividends, it raised prices to pay off the debt. Every time.

Multiple companies are discontinuing their blu ray and 4K players.

In addition to the obvious, devastating implications for film preservation, it illustrates once again that the ultra-rich will not be happy until everything in our lives is subscription-based. A landlord for every need.

Years ago when the Tea Party shut down all govt funding, a friend's cancer treatment was halted as it was Medicaid & govt funded. She had 1 treatment to go. She had to REAPPLY FOR AID. Took months, during which cancer returned & got in her bones. Paul fucking Ryan killed her.
Every time the government shuts down some self proclaimed leftists say it's actually good on anti-imperialism grounds, and I just want to remind everyone that (a) Veterans benefits get cut off, but the military is still funded, and (b) PEOPLE WHO NEED GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS DIE WHENEVER THIS HAPPENS.
