It’s official. My university who told me for all of the years I have been a faculty person they it valued diversity all of a sudden decided it no longer does without even attempting to resist a legally questionable executive order.

Penn to introduce changes to University discrimination policies, remove term ‘diversity’
The changes include the renaming of several statements, offices, and policies, and the elimination of terms including “diversity.”

NEW RESEARCH: Seamounts are a HUB for sharks!

New research on seamounts off Ascension Island has found that there are 41 TIMES the amount of sharks there than in the open ocean, despite no increase in primary productivity.

The Advice I Wish I'd Received: IDWGS 2025

Professor Milner-Gulland from @biology.ox.ac.uk recommends seeking advice from senior researchers and the rewards of collaboration across career stages.

#WomenInScience #IDWGS2025
It's scary to ask for feedback and advice from senior people, especially when you're not confident that your work is good enough. I wish I'd known that equal and fun collaborations across career stages are possible, seeking advice can be a positive experience, and that senior people might find engaging with a student on their research to be the best part of their day. Pericentromeric #heterochromatin clusters into chromocenters. @skrutlnize.bsky.social &co use quantitative mass spec to characterize the chromocenter proteome in multiple tissues, identifying a link between satellite DNA-binding proteins & #transposon repression🧪 @plosbiology.org plos.io/4akuNAi
Loss of D1 during embryogenesis triggers transposon expression in adult ovaries. Top: Ovaries from the indicated genotypes (D1 and aubergine mutants and heterozygotes, F1 and F2) were stained with Vasa (green) and DAPI (magenta). Bottom: RNA in situ hybridization against Copia (green) and total polyadenylated mRNA (blue) was performed in ovaries of the indicated genotypes that were also stained for DAPI (magenta). Yellow and black arrowheads indicate undifferentiated germ cells in the aubergine mutant germarium.

I have a PhD position open to start fall semester 2025!

The position will include investigations of the structure of both phenotypic (behavioral) plasticity and genetic variation in behavior as well as lots of opportunity to develop your own project.
#Evolution #evobio #evolsky #Ecology 🧪
Flier for PhD position. Text with a lab logo at the bottom with a cricket silhouette of a cricket with antenna that look like normal curves. Also has a picture of a cricket (Acheta domesticus) on a white background.
Text:
Crickets! Behavior!
Genetics! Statistics!

The Dochtermann Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking to fill a PhD assistantship examining how selection has shaped phenotypic plasticity and patterns of genetic variance.
The position will start Fall Semester 2025 and the
incoming student will be joining a dynamic department (www.ndsu.edu/biology) and an interdisciplinary graduate program that provides a broad foundation for success (www.ndsu.edu/ecs).

For more information about the lab visit www.neddochtermann.com

If interested, please contact me at ned.dochtermann@gmail.com with a brief synopsis of your research interests.

If I get the times correctly, the WSJ announcement followed a meeting of China's National Health Commission (NHC), during which it was confirmed that the new virus was causing the pneumonia. The meeting is reported in @daliyang.bsky.social's book, Wuhan. ▫️2/

screenshot of text: "On January 8, the NHC Expert Panel chaired by Xu Jianguo met to assess the laboratory results. The group concluded that the novel coronavirus as identified by the laboratories was the etiological agent causing the outbreak in Wuhan. The announcement of this conclusion came out the following day in the form of a bland Xinhua News Agency interview with Xu Jianguo."
