When transphobes claim that trans women shouldn't compete because "biological men are better than biological women" they aren't just being transphobic, misogynistic, and ignoring the science, but they're also being ahistorical.
Per my ex, this also happened in U.S. women's fencing. A woman won the national championship, then the sexes were segregated - and ALSO the records. Thus the fact that she was the all-round champion was disappeared.
Figure skating world championships were considered to be for men only until 1902, when Madge Syers showed up and took home silver and the ISU went "whooooops guess we need to segregate them."
It happened again in 1992 Olympic skeet shooting: Zhang Shan took gold and then they segregated the event.
