IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

As of January 1st 2026, John and I are **no longer** the owners of Complexly (the educational media company we started 15 years ago that makes Crash Course, Eons, SciShow, Study Hall, and a bunch of other shows.)

We have been the sole owners for all that time...

Some people think being homeless is a moral failing, when actually the moral failure is that we as society don't think certain people deserve to have a warm place to sleep at night unless they get rid of their dog or stop using drugs or get a job.

People deserve homes because they are human.
"By the end of the two-year period, 94% of participants reported they were housed."

A million pilot programs show the same thing: when people are given enough money to afford housing, homelessness ends.

Other supports matter, but housing comes first. Not policing. Not moralizing. Homes.

I won't dispute this as I don't have any data to do so, but I will say this has not been my own path. If anything, my awareness of how much my path out of poverty was as much the result of luck as it was any work I did makes me more sensitive to how hard it is to advance economically in the US.

⚠️ Potential danger: “Snowcrete” sliding off slanted roofs ❄️🧊

With temps rising above 32 today, be especially alert for snow and ice shedding from roofs of homes, schools, and businesses, it can pose a serious hazard.

Be alert for this and avoid prone areas.

🇪🇸 Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté says that due to the support he’s received Universal Studios have reconsidered and granted the rights for his Minions program, there are still a couple of things to be tied up but he is very close to clearing it.

My time is pretty limited. Should I watch the Glitter & Gold documentary series? I already know quite a bit about these three ice dance teams.

It's absolutely unacceptable for an athlete who has followed all procedures all season to be informed he needs to change his music right before competing. Copyright issues may go beyond the ISU but the body representing the athletes IS responsible for preventing this kind of disruption #ReformTheISU
So Tomas did everything the ISU told him to do months in advance only to find out he has to change his SP a week before the Olympics ⛸️

We’ve been reminding folks to shovel, and it’s caused a bit of a debate. A main reason we are pushing to do so early and often is that sleet is very heavy.

As of noon, D.C. had picked up 1.13 inches of liquid (melted snow/sleet) from this storm. That’s quite a lot in winter. (1/n?)

🍩
Sleet is inevitable Sunday-freezing rain is what worries us.

Sleet bounces off trees & power lines. Freezing rain glazes them & that’s when outages become a risk. It's like a sprinkled donut (sleet) vs a glazed donut (freezing rain).

Freezing rain risk increases late afternoon, esp E/SE of Beltway

Reupping this for folks looking down the barrel of this huge winter storm.

You should look up other tips to prepare as well. Example: If you have travel/rechargeable batteries, fill 'em up now. I have a couple plugged in as I write this.
If you get snow this weekend and aren't familiar with it — or even if you are — shoveling is very tough work. This is a decent list of dos and don'ts… but I'd add don't do it *at all* if you're over 50. It's very hard on the heart, especially in extreme cold.

Hey friends, it's -15 degrees outside! In temps like this, exposed or improperly insulated skin can get frostbitten in as little as 10 minutes. Here's how you care for it if it happens.

First, you need to identify what level of frostbite you have!

My children are going to either love or completely hate that the ice people from the ISU vanity card have been replaced with a new graphic of... glitter people? Anyway, the ice people were their favorite part of any ISU broadcast, so we'll see how this goes over 😅

A single individual boycotting figure skating won't fix fascism, but a single individual supporting the queer people within the sport raises all of them up, makes all our voices louder, and keeps change moving!
FYI, I have already seen dozens of comments about how it's bad to be enjoying figure skating actually because the sport is homophobic and also we should be boycotting all sports because that will somehoe fix fascism. I will block that shit.
