you're already seeing & will see more stories about how various attempts at reducing energy use "aren't working," etc -- those are propaganda. this is fantastic

Every smartphone in the world contains a CPU descended from one designed by a trans woman in the 1980s. The Matrix is one of the most influential movie franchises of all time. Electronic music was pioneered and popularized by a trans woman. I could go on

i think my favourite part about being a trans woman is how much of an impact we have on culture. a friend reminded me today about a popular meme format she created. another friend today casually told me about how she was the most notorious roblox hacker when she was a child.

just a day in the life!

in 2007, steve jobs promised an all-in-one device that would serve as a cell phone, an ipod, and an internet device. what he introduced next was the Mac Pack: a 135-pound backpack with a pull-over steel dome housing a computer monitor, a 14-foot aerial antenna, and a 900-foot retractable power cable

everything about the attempt to co-opt the language of social justice to promote AI personhood makes my skin absolutely crawl

that people are doing it in the current political environment, where the most basic human rights are crumbling before our eyes, is as bleak as it gets for me

There was something inspirational growing up in this era, so much hope through science and cooperation

Which is why is feels so awful becoming an adult when anti-intellectualism and pride in lacking empathy have taken root

Many silicon valley guys, including Theil and Musk and Andreesen have all explained this.

They believe AI is a magic god that can solve every problem without requiring any sort of sacrifice or consideration that would create inherent material and political conflict.

In other words they're idiots.

This 'AI making energy 100 times cheaper' statement by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman to Trevor Noah on the What Now Podcast doesn't make any sense.

AI increases "energy" (electricity) demand, increasing electricity prices. Economics 101.

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

it is useful not to lose sight of how, underneath everything else, hollow all of this noise is. portland and chicago are warzones, so i am dispatching a couple hundred best buy assistant managers there to quell the insurrections. potemkin stuff, paper thin

OPENAI LAWYER: so how does this sound. 'user x' pays us $3 to generate a video of elsa suffocating him with her ass. from that, you will receive a princely 50¢

DISNEY LAWYER: i am going to shoot you with a gun

i think we are going to find out at some point these guys invented cocaine 2 and have been on it all along
Buried in Altman's post is the real story: "People are generating much more than we expected per user," using massive compute resources on content that's often being generated for very small audiences (it is, after all, a social media app). OpenAl will "have to somehow make money for video generation," Altman wrote. Translation: Sora is burning through compute costs with no offsetting revenue.
Altman floated a potential solution: "We are going to try sharing some of this revenue with rightsholders who want their characters generated by users." The idea-perhaps similar to You Tube's ad-monetization program for videos that include copyrighted material
-would give studios a financial incentive to opt in.
"The exact model will take some trial and error to figure out," Altman acknowledged, "but we plan to start very soon."
