This piece suggests Trump might try to shake staff up at the one year mark & that Hegseth's incompetence might finally be drawing Senate R scrutiny. If there is going to be a shake-up because of sagging poll numbers, maybe Trump can be forced to dump both Hegseth and RFK Jr. at the same time.
As congressional scrutiny of Pete Hegseth intensifies, Donald Trump is starting to tire of his scandals. Atlantic writers spoke with roughly two dozen officials about the defense secretary’s bad week:
Pete Hegseth Is Seriously Testing Trump’s ‘No Scalps’ Rule
Lawmakers are finally waking up to the problems the defense secretary has created.

It happened again: The Trump administration has admitted illegally deporting a man to Guatemala despite an immigration judge's order that he was likely to be tortured there.

Sincerely, if I was a Dem executive and had an idea this was going to happen, I’d deploy armed officers to bar any intruders from the citizenship ceremony until it was complete. A sacred space and a sacred obligation, and letting fascist goons pick people off at the front door is an abomination

So, the way they're going to parse this is that Hegseth didn't say "kill them all," he said "destroy the boat and everyone in it." This is like his Signalgate argument that he didn't release classified info...
...because he declassified it
WaPo is reporting that Bradley told lawmakers that Hegseth DID give a kill order.

Also, the national security strategy makes working with western hemisphere leaders our top diplomatic priority — so just as in the first term, the strategy is not controlling policy choices.

Excellent summary.

As someone else noted, the NSS doesn’t have nearly the impact of the NDS, especially with a POTUS who has no interest in following any strategy.

But this does not bode well for the NDS. Despite the rumored pushback from the uniformed side, ultimately only one person decides.

As far as I can see, this nat sec strategy is far harsher on Europe than on Russia. There is no mention of a threat from Russia or of deterrence, only that "re-establishing strategic stability" is a priority. Europe is cast as a major threat to freedom. A radical, dangerous document.
