Very proud of Celena Cherian in the lab, who contributed data to www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Briefly, Celena showed female fat body cells have higher ribosomal protein expression and more protein synthesis than males. This difference persists even after cell size is accounted for!
Cell type specific allometry controls sex-differences in Drosophila body size
Species and sex-specific differences in organ size are fundamental features of animal biology, yet the mechanisms that drive these differences remain debated. Adult female Drosophila are larger than m...

PM Carney @mark-carney.bsky.social, your 15% proposed cuts to Tri-council funding will run counter to your election promise to accelerate Canadian innovation. Canadian scientists are among the lowest funded of the top 10 world economies. More funding of discovery science is a priority.

While Canada plans for another round of CERC hirings (which costs millions); support to retain international talent & support 🇨🇦 researchers may be cut!

Sign this letter to request @markcarneyforpm.bsky.social to stop the proposed cuts to
research & innovation!
caut.bsky.social
In Canada, proposed cuts of 15% across the federal government would have a dramatic effect on already globally decimated research & science.

Join Canada's research & science community and tell PM Mark Carney to preserve the funding promised in 2024.

For our #flowcytometry peeps, would you like to have a single fix/perm protocol that is optimised for everything? One that preserves fluorophores while allowing simultaneous TF and cytokine staining? How about 100-fold cheaper?

You got it:

Myofibrils have a second-harmonic-generation microscopy gradient. 👍

One nice thing about working with muscles and myofibrils is that biophysicists love them, and so we collaborate with them. Here, Danielle Tokarz's group at @smuhalifax.bsky.social used polarization second-harmonic generation microscopy in single fibrils opg.optica.org/boe/fulltext...

We’re excited to share the first 3D, data-driven musculoskeletal model of Drosophila legs based on Hill-type muscles, running in OpenSim and MuJoCo simulation environments.

This might be one of the simplest images I captured, but very fascinating nonetheless, as it shows how tight the cytoplasm in a plant cell is. The cytosol and all other organelles are squished between the plasma membrane (magenta) and the central vacuole (its membrane is green)
#MicroscopyMonday
The image shows one straight magenta line and, close to it, another wavy green line.

Ant reproduction is getting weirder and weirder. Here’s the latest: queens of a Mediterranean harvester ant mate with males from a different species and then lay eggs that clonally inherit those males’ genome. I.e., they lay eggs that develop into a different species. 🤯
