Absolutely agreed with this, and it's one reason I love Neal Stephenson despite the problematic bits. Nobody remembers the *plot* of Cryptonomicon, but everyone remembers the three pages on the best way to eat Cap'n Crunch cereal.
I don't know if I am just running in the opposite direction to be contrary but I have really started enjoying all the tangents of pre-20th century fiction. Modern entertainment is so optimized and philistine audiences scream bloody murder about "not moving the plot"
