Trying (and only somewhat succeeding) not to go through the answers and nitpick.

Anyway, the best one will always be Joan Watson and Sherlock Holmes.
What are some of your favorite portrayals of strictly platonic male-female friendships on TV or movies? Not a "will they or won't they?" Just platonic.

DOJ files released today show prosecutors in 2019 discussing 10 Epstein co-conspirators, interviews with 25 victims, and subpoenas across multiple states.

Yet FBI Director Kash Patel swore under oath there was “no credible information” Epstein trafficked victims to others.

WTF?

And Amtrak’s “was it our sagging wire or NJT’s pantograph, who can tell?” charade is total nonsense. Metro-North and ConnDOT upgraded the famously slow New Haven Line to constant tensioned wiring to stop pantograph tangles. It cut them by ~80%. Amtrak *refuses* to do it in NJ. This is on Amtrak.

One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

20,000 SF customers still lack power due to PG&E’s meltdown.

The private utility model is broken. PG&E is a monopoly fighting to stay a monopoly & not paid based on its performance.

It’s why I authored legislation to make PG&E publicly owned. Utilities must serve the public, not shareholders.🧵
California utilities will keep almost all profits as regulators ease up. They’re still upset
Utilities will suffer small reductions to profits as state regulators ease up on recommended cuts and electric bills remain high

This is one of the most important yet easiest things you can do today. This man is responsible for thousands if not millions of deaths, and is aiming for more.

GET HIM OUT OF OFFICE. It takes 5 min to call or email your congressperson to ask them to impeach RFK Jr.
Our Articles of impeachment against RFK jr. are sitting in the House of Representatives RIGHT NOW. With only two co-sponsors…CALL YOUR REPS. RAISE HELL.

Did you know that the US hasn’t had an ambassador in Moscow in 6 months?

Or that our chief envoy to Russia won’t take briefings from the CIA?

But wait, there’s more. Much more in this 6-byline WSJ piece on the Witkoff-Putin axis.

I honestly still can’t believe they did this

it’s just photos on a desk! it’s not even in the same league as his fucking birthday note! removing it after the fact is the biggest possible “we are covering shit up” signal they could possibly send, couldn’t look guiltier if they tried
This photo, file 468, from the Epstein files that includes Donald Trump has apparently now been removed from the DOJ release.

AG Bondi, is this true? What else is being covered up? We need transparency for the American public.

More news companies doing this nonsense. Have a look at the first two paragraphs of ProPublica’s mission statement. How is a genAI app going to do *investigative journalism* when it can only access what is already available on the web? When it can’t be relied upon to check sources? It’s ridiculous.

once you realize many electeds come into office with a) the genuine desire to do good but b) not a ton of policy experience across the breadth of their portfolio and c) a degraded institutional structure, it becomes clear how this creates an opening for the advocate with a white paper and a smile

One big takeaway from Mamdani bringing YIMBYs into his transition is that advocates can often gain a lot of power by

1.) having useful answers to questions and accurate information

2.) being reasonably polite and pleasant to elected officials

3.) understanding the actual mechanics of government

the number one requirement for the next Dem president is that they are willing to look back

with a flamethrower
There's a series of things (like the ballroom, Gulf of America) that we're going to have to *undo* the moment this guy is out of office.
And yet I can already hear future Democrat presidents saying "I'm focused on the people's work, not the knucklehead stuff" and just leave this man's shit up.

Great news: Gov Hochul has reportedly decided to veto a bill requiring two-person train operation.

This poorly-considered bill would've mmediately impacted services that are currently run with one person, and would've make it impossible to fully automate new lines like the IBX.
Gov Hochul will veto a bill to require both a conductor and a driver on every subway train, according to two sources familiar with the decision. Story to follow. Details on the bill here:

Muting a Black woman to claim the vote was unanimous is so incredibly on the nose
The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.

NB: When I, a professor of law, profess that an act is unlawful, I am not doing it to inform the lawbreaker, but rather to inform you, the reader.

So the question “what, like you think he cares?” is inapposite. The question is whether *you* care. I think you should, which is why I bother.

In case you need a reminder: there is no amount of capitulating to technocratic chicanery that will fix publishing. It has already made things worse and will continue to make things worse for everyone involved.

Orgs like PW should have learned this lesson eons ago but today's as good as day as any.
AI isn’t coming to publishing—it’s already here. PW’s new AI for Publishing Bootcamp gives teams the tools and workflows to keep up.

First session is Feb 11. Early Bird pricing is now open.

Signing this gives the publisher money meant for you forever.
