Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror (1997)

I’m taking a quick break from my quick social media break to say:
Goldeneye rise up as my 1997 favourite game then and now
Quote this with your favourite game from 1997 NOW, and what your favourite was THEN (if you had one)

(Please make clear which is which)

Localisations/expansions count, remasters/ports don't. Remakes depend.

Two-way ties count.

2004 is tough, how to decide between Burnout 3: takedown, Fable and GTA San Andreas…
Okay then, GTA, now, Burnout
Quote this with your favourite game NOW that was released in 2004, and what your favourite was THEN (if you had one)

Is Indigo Prophecy the same game as Fahrenheit? Not sure why the name is different but I recognise the cover art, if so that’s my then and now. Teenage me loved it.

This is a much more eloquent version of what I was griping about with the 3D print I'd originally planned for my holiday gifts: thousands of unseeable tiny polygons hidden inside the model and serving no purpose, other than to waste filament and create potential weaknesses.

You should read it.
This hasn't been a priority of any AAA studios for a long while and honestly it is you the end user who is footing the bill.

The vast majority of games push your hardware through inefficiency rather than spectacle or quality.

You can do a whole lot more with current pcs then you get.
Please 🙏. I don’t even care about the RAM shortage I just think it would be cool to have my game optimized to play on an oldish PC.

Okay, 2012 - very interesting to see Duolingo in the backloggd list, never thought of it as a game game but anyway, I digress I haven’t played much from this year. Then and now: Mass Effect 3

Yea I’m very much for this, I like big and long games but I’m very happy with smaller, shorter games too! Might mean developers are able to take risks with interesting stories and mechanics
Not every AAA game needs to be 80+ hours long and take 7 years to make and sell ten million copies to hit “targets.” We don’t need to keep doing that.

Cuphead. Would have to be my favourite from 2017 (there’s a lot of great games from that year) it’s such a neat and challenging game and my first really hard game I persevered with.

In Dragon Age Inquisition the mounted speed boost doesn’t actually make you go faster. They just change the FOV and add speed lines. You are going the same speed.

At risk of flogging a dead horse: this whole letter is a reminder that the creative process is an end in and of itself, and vital to self-actualisation. You can’t experience BECOMING, as he puts it, by outsourcing it to ChatGPT.
In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.

KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.
