I have always wanted to see one of these, but alas I think you are right, a lot have them have been lost to time or vandalism which is a shame. Although I have heard there’s a few in wales !

#31DaysOfGraves day 8: Glass. Martyrs' Monument, Stirling. Margaret (18) and Agnes (13) Wilson were sentenced to death in 1685 for their religious beliefs. Agnes was reprieved, but Margaret, and Margaret McLauchlan, in her late 60s, were drowned at the stake in the rising tide of the Solway Firth
A large glass octagonal memorial with a domed roof. Inside are the white figures of two girls. They have a lamb at their feet and an angel stands over them.

#31DaysofGraves Day 8 Glass... maybe

This is what I think is a Victorian etched black glass-front on the grave of William Bannister of Trafford House, #Burnley, his wife Sarah, Bertha, their daughter Mary Alice Wormwell Smith, and her son Alex Stewart Wormwell.

I am open to enlightenment!

Final resting place at Lister Lane Cemetery of former carpet weaver William Glass (d. 12th December 1872, aged 67) and wife Amelia (d. 16th February 1871, aged 66). Both William and Amelia were originally from Wellington, Somerset.

Day 8: Glass

I like to affectionately call this mausoleum the gingerbread house. This one has lovely stained glass windows, which I apparently didn’t get pictured. You can see them peeking through the tracery though.

A small, ornate Gothic-style mausoleum at Kensal Green Cemetery, built from pale stone and adorned with intricate carvings and stained-glass windows. The arched doorway is framed by detailed floral motifs, and above it is an inscription in Latin. The roof is tiled in muted shades of red and green, with wrought-iron finials along the ridge. A deep red, decorative iron fence encloses the front of the tomb, casting patterned shadows on the ground. In the background, gravestones and Celtic crosses stretch across the cemetery beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky, with sunlight breaking through the trees and illuminating parts of the scene in a warm, ethereal glow

Lovely to see the final resting place of the writer Radclyffe Hall - somehow it seems very fitting. I would very much like to pay a visit, soak up the atmosphere of the place and pay my respects to this most extraordinary person.

Day 6: Gender
#31daysofgraves

Radclyffe Hall, also known as John is buried near by in the circle of Lebanon, in Highgate Cemetery, London.

As always, more information in the alt text.
A quiet, atmospheric path curves through a row of grand, weathered stone mausoleums in the Circle of Lebanon at Highgate Cemetery, London. The tombs, built into the hillside, feature classical architectural details such as columns, pediments, and carved inscriptions. Moss and ivy cling to the old stone, and a soft green carpet of grass borders the gravel walkway. The air feels still and reverent beneath the shelter of overhanging trees.

This photograph depicts the Circle of Lebanon in Highgate Cemetery (West), one of London’s most historic and architecturally remarkable burial grounds. Opened in 1839, Highgate is known for its elaborate Victorian funerary art, Egyptian- and Greek-inspired architecture, and as the resting place of many notable figures.

Among those interred here is Radclyffe Hall (1880–1943) an English author best known for The Well of Loneliness (1928), a groundbreaking novel in LGBTQ+ history. The book, which depicted the life and struggles of a lesbian protagonist, was the subject of an obscenity trial in Britain, leading to its ban at the time. Despite the controversy, Hall’s work became a cornerstone of queer literary heritage, and they are remembered today as a pioneering figure for visibility and representation.

Hall was buried alongside their partner Una Troubridge, an artist and sculptor, reflecting their lifelong companionship. Their tomb is located in the West Cemetery, not far from the area shown in the image. a serene and deeply symbolic space that continues to draw visitors interested in both literary and LGBTQ+ history.
A black-and-white profile portrait of Radclyffe Hall, the early 20th-century English novelist and poet. Hall is shown in left-facing profile, wearing a dark tailored jacket with a high-collared white shirt and bow tie. A wide-brimmed black hat casts a soft shadow across their face, emphasizing their strong, composed features. A single pearl earring is visible, and the smooth background draws attention to Hall’s distinctive, androgynous elegance — a style that challenged Edwardian gender conventions and became emblematic of their identity and literary legacy.

Me too! I believe if you do visit, their mausoleum is marked on the map of the west cemetery, but the entrance to the circle of Lebanon is hard to miss for sure ! So so worthwhile 💜

Day 7 of #31DaysOfGraves - Angel

Angels come in so many different shapes and sizes in Scottish graveyards, we've opted for this Victorian Gothic form, sitting in the shadow of Glasgow Cathedral, forever gently dropping stone flower petals onto the graves of the Smith family below...

Day 7: Angel

I couldn’t resist reposting this one. Possibly one of my many favourites from Kensal Green. She’s broken but she’s still a beauty.

#31daysofgraves
A black and white image of a chest tomb where a robed figure is perched upon it. It was once a winged stone angel, unfortunately time has not served them well and the angel has lost its head, arms, and part of its wings. The draped fabric still looks wonderfully preserved on what was likely a beautifully carved stone monument for the time.

Unable to find any weeping angels among my photos, this is technically a winged soul, seen on several stones in Collace churchyard in Perthshire. The inscription is very difficult to read, even with the assistance of the MI book! #31DaysofGraves #Day7 #Angel
A pointed sandstone grave marker in a leafy setting. The only clearly visible part is the top of the front, showing a face with wings emanating from either side - a winged soul.
