the little stranger was a great first book of the year — so much unease and creepiness that doesn't emanate from the expected source! (or perhaps it does, if i really think about it)

The biggest “block” writers face is time and money and gatekeeping (by the people who can offer money to give you that time.)

I would welcome a day that I didn’t wake up with fourteen great ideas that I simply don’t have the time or money to do properly. AI directly threatens that. It doesn’t help.

I was out of Israeli prison in five days. They’ve been holding Dr Hussam Abu Safiya for nearly a year without charge, along with thousands more Palestinians. A ceasefire without an end to occupation and accountability for Israel will just be a slower continuation of the genocide

The most ridiculous irony is that if you actually want more disabled and chronically ill people in work we need MORE quicker better diagnosis --> more targeted support and treatment for people's actual conditions, not CBT or pyscho-social therapy as a generalised sticking plaster on symptoms.

"In total, there were 254,808 hours of sewage outflows in national parks last year."

Yet another, more pressing issue, the government should be dealing with instead of demonising refugees and pandering to the far right.

i'm not sure what's up with the birds here at the moment, maybe its all the thunderstorms. originally, we had seagulls nesting on the building next door, and they'd circle and shout all day. now, there's two crows that are screeching almost non-stop, swooping between the two trees. ominous!

Our lead ship on the Global Sumud Flotilla was droned and caught fire. The six who were onboard are safe, and our mission will continue. They know international opinion is turning inexorably against them. Bombing peaceful humanitarians won’t exactly help that, but it’s the only response they’ve got.

The gov says it wants more Disabled people in work. Then why is it cutting the scheme that helps them stay there?

Many people are reporting 60-80% cuts or even total withdrawal of their support, with no explanation.

I keep getting asked for my salty thoughts about the Salt Path as my position on nature cure narratives is v clear! A mere fraction of those thoughts published here @literaryhub.bsky.social, with thanks to @bookwormvaught.bsky.social and @nicwilson.bsky.social for their earlier pieces linked below.
Nature is Not Going to Cure You: On Raynor Winn’s Fabricated Memoir
Like many writers, I have been following the unfolding revelations about Raynor Winn and The Salt Path with great interest, and a degree of self-interest. I am a memoirist and nature writer, and I …

We were there Saturday to see Vampire Weekend, was glad they spoke out at the start of the set. To add to the Victorious shitshow this year, they oversold accessibility tickets so that so many disabled people didn't have spots on the platform. Profit over accessibility, too, it seems.

"The DWP itself considers PIP fraud to be so minimal, it marks it at 0%."

Yet it is advertising covert surveillance roles to, in their words, "gather evidence to prove/disprove offences."

Medical knowledge? Training and understanding of the complexity of disability? Not in the ad.
The DWP is now recruiting even more people to spy on benefit claimants

The Canary previously reported on one round of DWP job adverts for 'covert surveillance officers'. Now, it has expanded its recruitment further.

It is very hard to see how the UK government can sign this statement, which makes it absolutely clear that it recognises that Israel is committing - as a matter of state policy - deliberate and systematic war crimes, without at a minimum cutting all military cooperation with Israel.

When I pointed out King’s will lose 90% of its AHRC student-led places under the new scheme, I got piled on by the AHRC Chair claiming I was wrong and scaremongering.

It wasn’t quite 90%.

This year King’s students got 27 AHRC student-led scholarships.

Next year they’re giving us 3.

So 89% then.
'The number of student-initiated PhD scholarships funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is set to fall by 60 per cent when new doctoral training arrangements come into effect next year, new figures show.' 1/3

Just a reminder that your disabled/ill friends, family, & peers can see the ableist things you're saying in your ill-wishes to Trump. I get it, the guy is evil and you want to see him pay for the suffering he has caused. But can we not resort to ableism? Some of the things being said are horrific.
