The wave continues to build, even in Florida.

1) I was having drinks with @gregrucka.com who is in LA for VERY SECRET REASONS and we were discussing this post, because he had just finished A Thing and I am in the middle of A Thing and write all day, literally 9 to 5, and we were talking baout how THAT felt ...
I said it before, will say it again -- generative AI fetishizes "ideas" while sneering at effort, execution, and education. That, despite Gen-AI being built on and out of other people's effort, execution and education.
A.I. and the Fetishization Of Ideas

IMO it's a messy discussion partly because people conflate "high quality" and "literary."

I can list comics I think are in same category as great lit. Some examples: Love Bunglers, Human Diastrophism, From Hell, Big Questions, Maus, Fun Home.

But that list's only partly based on quality.

(thread)
I feel conflicted about the comics / literature discourse, because on the one hand, of course they’re literature, but on the other hand, people are out here claiming things like that Saga is totally on par with Moby Dick and like, no, no it isn’t, fuck off, do you even read, bro?

Those comics are all extremely high quality. But the other reason I list them is that they're in or adjacent to (what I subjectively perceive as) the "literary" genre.

There are comics that are ludicrously high quality that aren't in the "literary" genre. For example, Calvin and Hobbes.

Another problem is that comics are, despite some antecedents going back centuries, a really young genre. Most widely-acknowledged great literary fiction is at least a half century old; Moby Dick is 175 years old, I think.

Comics are too young to have many acknowledged masterpieces that old.

And finally - going back to the Calvin and Hobbes example - I think too many people conflate "in the high literature genre" and "greatest."

There are things comics do that prose can't do as well or as naturally.

Comics can be great with or without aping the "literary" genre.

The anti-MAHA messaging really needs to play this up. Do you realize the infant mortality rate in the US less than 100 years ago was over 60 per 1000 births and now it's down to 5.47 per 1000.
Also formula is a medical miracle. Babies used to just fucking starve to death!

Studios lament the loss of "company men" without looking at the differences in the ways Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were treated.

You get "company men" by being good to the men who work for the company.
From Jack Kirby to Steve Gerber to Alan Moore to pretty everybody else who ever worked for DC or Marvel, "Work for Hire" is one of the biggest con jobs ever pulled.
