I love how throughout Drive My Car people talk about how great of a driver Misaki is but in the first scene of her driving she reverses using only mirror observations, which the DVSA would consider a 'serious' mistake on the UK driving test

One thing that powerfully reminds me of how long ago 2003 was is that nobody pushing this today seems to remember how long and sustained the pr campaign to build support both domestically and internationally for the Iraq War actually was
Trump on Venezuela: "Getting land, oil rights, whatever we had -- they took it away because we had a president that maybe wasn't watching. But they're not gonna do that. We want it back. They took our oil rights. We had a lot of oil there. They threw our companies out. And we want it back."

Excluding covid, the unemployment rate is at its highest level in over 8 years.

The labor market is deteriorating particularly quickly for young workers, who are facing a 10.6% unemployment rate.

This reflects the way a lot of monolingual Anglophones think about bilingualism, however. They can imagine speaking one language fluently and knowing a bit of some others, but cannot really understand that many of us are actually *fluent* or indeed are *native speakers* of more than one language.
This is a really appalling editorial error on BBC Question Time

"Apparently one in three children don't speak English as a first language, why does this matter?"

Chair says "have English as a second language"

Caption changes the meaning entirely

Welcome to Britain, a country so short of dentists that an MP's 87-year-old mum pulled her teeth out with pliers. Also a country with thousands of foreign-qualified dentists who can’t work until they pass an exam so oversubscribed it’s like trying to book Glasto tickets. www.ft.com/content/f4e5...

just thinking about how disgusted my late uncle Tony - lifelong trade unionist and Labour councillor - would be with the state of the party today
"He wanted the deportations of people born in Britain to be “as voluntary as possible”. So not "voluntary" then.

Labour and Reform are essentially aligned on anti-immigration. The only difference being that Labour claims its xenophobic cruelty is "progressive".
