Speaking of the American church, where I have landed is that it is so difficult as to be nearly impossible to be both prosperous and capable of humbling oneself and rejecting temporal notions of hierarchy -- i.e., a Christian in the image of Christ.
as a christian, the "problem of evil" is definitely hairy but two millennia of theology have turned out some compelling ideas that have helped me grapple with that question. but the problem of why it seems like so many christians are so uniquely bad... yeah, that's a tough one.

It would be so awesome if humanity were good.
I cannot stress this enough but the internet was a mistake. It could have been many things but we made it this. We are not the people for this kind of power.

Schumer says Republican senators have "expressed a lot of troublesome comments about what Trump is doing and the way he is doing it" in conversations with Democratic senators today ...

Young men may have said that to canvassers or whoever, but what they actually believed was "only a man should be able to tell other men to do war stuff," and this was not particularly difficult to discern.
People I know in Pennsylvania who volunteered for Harris said the biggest reason why young men didn't want to vote for Harris was that they believed she would send them to war.
I’m thinking this morning about all the people I spoke to last year who were absolutely convinced, and tried to convince me, that Trump would be antiwar compared to Biden and Harris.

In the past week alone he has attacked Nigeria and then Venezuela and also threatened to attack Iran (again).

Saw a guy in his late 70s at the cafe in Barnes & Noble holed up with a small black coffee and four newly purchased WWII books. 2026 is looking up already.

This, more than anything else, is the reason why the U.S. will never meaningfully rebuild from this admin.
One of my more controversial opinions is that the US needs to significantly raise taxes to the tune of a couple % of GDP right now, even before any expansive social democratic reforms, and that means you—yes you, dear highly educated professional—will need to pay up, not just nebulous billionaires.

It’s very very frustrating to know that there isn’t much chance of any accountability for this behavior after Trump
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

What this boils down to is what you think the purpose of art is. And that is something about which people have very different views.
The number of people who produce art, in the broadest sense of the word is a fraction of the number of people who could produce art. Actually, it's worse than hat. Slice art into the many mediums and genres. The number of people who could do that kind of art compared to who does is unbelievably tiny

I think all the time about how far and wide the "litter boxes in schools" talking point spread. To me it is the best representation of Will's thesis that the information environment - particularly social media - is the controlling factor in what people believe.
Something has changed deep down in the informational structure of American society and frankly it feels like our political thinkers don’t want to acknowledge it so they constantly retreat to this idea it can be solved with snappier campaign slogans - better branding and it’s 1997 again.

The most prominent example of this is on his second Presidential term. People do not pay any attention to records
I think it is exceptionally difficult to brand yourself as a moderate without material moderation in your record

the interaction between perception and position-taking is complex and fraught and differs politician to politician, but very few people have the magic ability to *separate* them

Where is the public health guidance?!

Could the problem possibly be that the people who gripe to each other about vaccines on Facebook are not people who would take 5 seconds to look for and read very easy to find information?

Was struck on a recent rewatch that, more than anything else, the pilot put viewers in the "Walter's life sucks because his bitch wife emasculates him; therefore, his meth-making is actually good and cool because he's reclaiming control" frame.
Breaking bad was about a guy who had many opportunities for his healthcare to be paid for (his former business partners, jrs accidental money laundering go fund me), but he preferred selling meth because ruining other people's lives feels more manly than accepting gifts.
