ELECTION UPDATE: A Providence city spokesperson tells me 1,540 voters have cast a ballot in the Ward 2 Special Election primary so far today. That's on top of 200 early voters and 265 mail ballots requested.

White folks asked about who welfare serves overestimate the number of Black people on welfare. Not only that, but just the mere THOUGHT of who welfare supports led less white people to support it. #blacksky
Race and Redistribution in the United States: An Experimental Analysis∗ Jesper Akesson, Robert W. Hahn, Robert D. Metcalfe and Itzhak Rasooly† February 12, 2022 Abstract It is often argued that many White Americans oppose redistributive welfare policies because of animosity toward Black Americans. While a host of observational studies lend credence to this view, it has not yet been rigorously tested using the tools of randomized inference. In this study, we do exactly this by conducting two incentive-compatible experiments (n = 9, 775) in which different participants are randomly given different information about the share of welfare recipients who identify as Black and White. Our empirical analysis yields four main findings. First, most respondents greatly overestimate the share of welfare recipients who are Black. Second, these exaggerated beliefs reduce support for welfare among White respondents, a causal claim that we establish using treatment assignment as an instrument for beliefs. Third, just making White participants think about the racial composition of welfare recipients––holding constant their actual beliefs––reduces their support for welfare. Fourth, providing accurate information about the racial composition of welfare recipients does not influence support for welfare (relative to not receiving any information).

A zine with small doodles throughout. The text reads: Good Things People Are Doing Right Now. A nonprofit volunteer-run coffee shop in Portland, OR has received over $20,000 in small donations, to provide food to people in danger of losing SNAP. Donations have come from around the world. Some are for as little as $1.17. Food shops around the country, too numerous to count, are advertising help to people who need it. Many places are offering free meals to kids. Others are offering not just food but things like menstrual products & socks. People on social media are offering crochet plushies, artwork, books, and more, in exchange for donations to food banks. I saw someone auctioning a screen accurate replica of a teacup from Our Flag Means Death to raise food bank money. The OFMD fandom has raised tens of thousands of dollars for great causes the past few years. People with 3D printers are making whistles. People good with words and design are making printable infographics. People good at peopling are getting these to their neighbors. And those neighbors are spending their days ready to head into the street, bravely responding to attacks on their communities by Border Patrol and ICE. “I know there are people who are at home tonight with their families, where they belong, because of the work Chicagoans are doing.” - Kelly Hayes There are people all around us doing good things. It is in the human spirit to take care of one another. When you are losing heart, remember how much care and love is being practiced around you. Whatever resources, skills, or connections we have, whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, we can find small ways to take care of us, together. Everything is just people doin’ stuff. Attacks on trans rights are often framed as efforts to "protect women."

But the reality is that such attacks only protect the patriarchy. Because enforcing a strict sex-based gender binary makes it easier to tilt that binary into a hierarchy where women are subordinate to men.

lol what the wealthy today don't seem to understand is part of staying wealthy in society is not pissing off the masses.

There's a reason why Carnegie and the Rockefellers poured money into institutions. Gutting institutions and making it harder for the masses to survive is a...choice.
