I don't get personal on main very often, but I spent a few hours writing this, and I want you to read it. It's about my dad and my stepmom, and me, and Stranger Things, and what's happening to the VA right now.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Gets Well and Truly Fucked — The Haunt*
Sometime in the late 1980s when I was a teenager, I accompanied my dad to the mall. Dad had gotten a pair of un-torn, un-used tickets to Woodstock as a gift and he wanted to have them framed for displ...

We've been anti-Costco for years because of their hard sell efforts and how we feel it promotes overconsumption. There's a good chance we may get a Costco membership this year.
We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.”

Very much co-sign this
I think about The City & the City (China Mieville) a lot-- as I contend with the fact that some people are living in the same geographical area as me but are taking in different information (or perhaps the same information but interpreted wildly differently?). You should read it, if you haven't.

Got my first "Violating an Executive Order" and "I'll make sure you lose federal funding" parent threat today for teaching "DEI" books in our upcoming "Liberty and Justice" themed unit. Even in "Blue" Massachusetts we're dealing with this.

Anyway, don't obey in advance, and don't obey later.

Excellent and scary, from @cwarzel.bsky.social who is doing some of the best reporting I'm seeing right now.
New: We spoke to government IT employees/contractors about DOGE. Their warnings were dire. The people who maintain the systems that keep the country working are terrified. "This is the largest data breach and the largest IT security breach in our country’s history—at least that’s publicly known."

It feels like no one should have to say this, and yet we are in a situation where it needs to be said, very loudly and clearly, before it’s too late to do anything about it: The United States is not a startup. If you run it like one, it will break.

Absurd.
Rubio claims that @USAID lifesaving assistance for health and humanitarian needs will continue. But his team just communicated that the entire agency will be imminently reduced from 14,000 to 294 people. Just 12 in Africa.

As a former diplomat with family and friends worldwide directly impacted by this (not to mention the millions who our programs help), I'm glad to see so many ways of fighting back. Foreign aid is imperfect, yes. But a blatant and illegal shutdown is not the way to make things better.
