The thing about fansubs is regardless of anything else that may be going on, ultimately fansubs are made by someone who *really cares about what they're making*. That actually was true at one time at Crunchyroll. It is not true now.

the whole "don't play the game, just watch a video on youtube that will explain its story to you" is so disheartening because the issue of accessibility is genuinely really important but it's always just people who want to be spoon-fed nicely quantifiable information

I just feel like a lot of people operate on the principle that "Treat others how you want to be treated" simultaneously implies and encourages "Treat others how they treat you" and like. I wish they didn't because it invariably just turns into "well that means I can be a shithead now and it's okay!"
