"Criticisms of AI must include guidance for responsible engagement with it, not just exhortations to avoid it" good lord, I am so tired of these pieces that are the "sensible AI guy" stance that mostly comes down to "AI is here to stay and I am ready to lick the boot, begrudgingly"

Brilliant!

"This is how you know none of what Elon Musk or any of these grifters are complaining about is about canon or 'saving real Star Trek'. It's about policing [...] the type of people that get to exist in both our visions of the future and in our present." 1/2
Whelp, I was already making a video essay on it and was going to release it tomorrow, but because Stephen Miller had to open his fascist mouth about Star Trek, I added to it and released it today. So enjoy me clowning on conservative assholes terrible Star Trek opinions - youtu.be/3HOzBtDUlbo

Guinea-Bissau Hepatitis B vaccine trial: another Tuskegee.

But read on…
Scoop: The leaked protocol of the CDC-funded Hepatitis B vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau. “This is another Tuskegee.”
The protocol reveals that the trial will withhold the Hepatitis B birth dose from thousands—without placebos, without universal maternal screening, and with endpoints critics call indefensible.

'Escalate,' as in "tensions escalate," comes from the word 'escalator.'

It first appeared in print in 1944.

'Escalator' originated as a trademarked term for the Otis Elevator Company's moving staircase and was demonstrated at the Paris Exposition in 1900.

Absolutely. I love this book. The Commander Vimes novels in the Discworld canon are some of my favourites. A practical man, down to earth, who always seeks Justice, but never wanted to lead a people's revolution, ended up being the best man for the job.

Trump wants to expand the Pentagon budget to $1.5 trillion, weeks after it failed its 8th audit in a row.

Meanwhile, his admin has worked to cut over $500 billion from core government programs like Medicaid and SNAP over claims of fraud.

Why is this flap-necked chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis) moving erratically across a South African road & what does it have to do with pigeons bobbing their heads?

The chameleon's disguise isn't complete without this herky-jerky motion.

Let's learn about saccadic movement!

I'm fascinated by these kinds of mechanical computers. It's so easy today to write software for a digital computer. A problem can be fixed quickly. But this would have to be worked out with incredible accuracy before it's built (even the prototypes).
Globus was a small rotating globe, approximately five inches wide, displaying the spacecraft's current and projected position above Earth. Instead of digital systems, it operated through a complex network of gears, cams, and mechanical differentials that converted orbital data into globe motion.

This should be part of every country's curriculum. Especially the skills needed to critically evaluate arguments that you agree with, not just to point at "the other side's" bad actors. Disinformation doesn't limit itself to sides.

It was filmed by NatGeo videographer Bertie Gregory in 2021.

Let's talk about what it's doing, how humans are involved & along the way, identify the origins of a Norse legend.

I think we can all agree it’s time for fireworks to become 100% illegal. Let’s ban fireworks everywhere in 2026

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

The term "tycoon" comes from Japanese taikun (大君) which means "great lord", but implied a de facto ruler without a line of succession to the throne.

This was significant as a title because the Shōgun who ruled Japan in practice was 'appointed by the Emperor', but held absolute power in practice.

That's on the list but maybe we could address datacenters, private mega yacht & jet travel, cruise ships, new pipelines, government blocking renewable systems, lack of public transit, trains & bikes lanes....
