An extraordinarily persistent belief you can see underlying so much British public life is that there is a set of Sensible people who have the mandate of heaven, and importantly their being Sensible is an inner trait they have not a description of some observable behaviour of theirs.
The current UK government's policy of "We must be as fascist as is necessary to stop people voting for fascists" seems to be predicated on the idea that fascists are bad people, but fascism itself is fine.

Government abuse of terrorism laws now means we have to rely on police moderation (rarely in ready supply) and understanding of Palestinian and Israeli politics (...) to avoid threats of arrest for a Palestinian flag in public, or for saying that the killing of 50k+ people is wrong 🙃
