Early reports of a school shooting this morning at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis (I was baptized at the church there). As always: it's the guns. The US is the only country in the world that politically tolerates and legally ensures the routine mass slaughter of its own citizens.
It's the Guns.
America is the only rich democracy that features the routine mass slaughter of its citizens with guns. Why does this happen? The data show a really clear picture: It's the guns. Yes, it's that simple.

FWIW, I think it's rather ironic that a lot of low-quality media studies over the last 50 years - and by "low-quality" I mean almost all of it - has concentrated on why mainstream media can't be trusted. But instead of consumers being more critical many have now turned to low quality, slop content.
I'm all for more media studies education, but never entirely convinced that "media literacy" is quite the right framing for understanding mid/disinformation or the break down of the public sphere.

They waited *more than an hour* to enter the Hortman home after watching Mark Hortman get shot in the doorway

Unbelievably tragic & heartbreaking

And, of course, they publicly congratulated themselves on a great, lifesaving police response when they’d let a lawmaker bleed out. Uvalde is everywhere
New details about police activity after lawmaker shootings raise questions about response
The Minnesota Star Tribune found that Brooklyn Park police waited more than 60 minutes to enter the Hortman home and that several law enforcement agencies were unaware of the situation for hours.

If all we needed to end ignorance and inform good choices was for accurate information to be public, the internet would have solved all our epistemic problems. It didn’t.

It’s not just a matter of having or not having information. The manner in which it is understood, the speech context, matters.

The US macro picture is messy right now but the UK's looks truly horrendous. BoE cut rates four times since the middle of last year and inflation is reaccelerating alongside both rising unemployment and dire productivity. And real yields continue to march higher. Just grim stuff.

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles
Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.
