As a military brat the Commissary and BX/PX were not only cheaper but also provided jobs to military spouses and their children.
When we got back from overseas and would start shopping more locally we would still make the trip on base for any and all essentials cause it was just cheaper.

They are called commissaries and they are on every US military base.
