Hi new people, especially those doing me the honor of following my musings!

I try to follow back anyone who follows me, unless

- Posting/replying history is empty (consider writing a post before following)
- Hateful/MAGA shit
- Crypto
- I fall behind (getting harder to keep up as Bluesky grows)

Me talking about writing and my career and how book censoring and white supremacy both suck a lot and also how I got my side gig as the DJ to the nerds
Earlier this fall I interviewed @scalzi.com at the Green Mountain Book Festival, and we spoke about his career writing and the state of science fiction in 2025.

At the risk of starting a Whole Thing: the reason vegans/vegetarians eat fake meat stuff is because meat tastes good and something that gives you a relatively similar experience without causing harm to animals is nice.

It’s not that deep and it’s always weird to me when people use it as a gotcha.

Also most people are not raised plant-based, they may have a lot of memories or associations with certain cultural or family dishes. If they can make their grandma’s poutine but vegan or whatever and that makes them feel good, your job is to shut up and eat your own food.

Journalists should start framing their questions like “defenseless survivors were apparently killed in the boat strikes. Shall I put down that you have no information about any of that?”
RAJU: If defenseless survivors were killed, would that constitute a violation of the laws of war?

MIKE JOHNSON: I'm not going to prejudge any of that. I was pretty busy yesterday. I didn't follow a lot of the news.

People used to say, with great confidence, that variable renewables could never safely provide more than 5% of grid power. That estimate has crept up ever since, though the "great confidence" part never wavers.

Anyway, about China ...

Department of Defense Law of War Manual, Sec. 18.3.2.1 states the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders.

What’s its key example? Wait for it . . . It’s "orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

It’s interesting to see the ire put against anarchists and their “violence” and to use an image of a cop pepper spraying peaceful protesters sitting on the ground.
This Day in Labor History: November 30, 1999. The WTO protests begin in Seattle. Carefully constructed coalitions between labor, environmentalists, and other activists were blown up by anarchists who hijacked the protests for their own purposes, leading to a violent response from the Seattle cops!!!

If the Venezuelan sailors were enemy combatants, then the 2nd strike is a war crime.

If the Venezuelan sailors weren’t enemy combatants, then both strikes are criminal murder.

It’s that simple.
