Trainer’s eyebrow cocked. He held out a hand, palm side up, towards Phan. “Give me your hand.” She did as instructed, holding out her arm. Trainer took hold of her wrist and ran the stone across her fingertip before releasing her. He held the stone to the light. Where Phan touched it, it shimmered a slight greenish color. He presented it to the old man. “This should be blue.” “It’s fine. As long as it’s not red, you’ll be okay. Pink probably isn’t great, either.” “Can you just go now?” asked the clerk. “Is there a reason you’re so eager to get rid of me?” Trainer asked. “Yes. You’re clearly a cop.” “He’s not,” said the old man. “I’m not,” said Trainer. “Well you’ve got cop energy. And the local governors don’t like cops.” “Governors? You mean the gangs.” “Same thing around here. But if they see you’re here, they’ll probably kill you.” “They won’t succeed,” Trainer said. “Unless you’ve got an army backing you up, I wouldn’t risk it.” Trainer looked the stone over once more. “I suppose I don’t have that.” He looked to Phan. “Come on. There’s nothing else for us here.” “Okay.”

She noticed the other cadets huddled around one of the tables, excitedly whispering to one another. “What’s going on?” She approached the table. Jase gave her a very self-satisfied grin. “Xank found this data slip.” “I didn’t find it. You did. Why are you trying to blame me?” “Well, whatever, you decrypted it.” “What is it?” asked Lizz. “And why are you being so weird about it?” “We didn’t want anyone to hear,” said Jase. “Hear what? And anyone who? Trainer left the ship almost an hour ago.” “He did?” Barzan asked. “Yeah. Didn’t he tell you?” “He did not,” said Xank. “Well, whatever. What’s up with this data slip?” “It’s Talla’s.” Jase’s grin didn’t fade. It felt unseemly. “Oh, God, there aren’t pictures of her or something on it, are there?” Lizz asked. “No, there…” Jase’s smile finally faded, “actually, we didn’t think to look for that yet.” He looked to Xank. Xank shook his head. “No, but it’s a whole bunch of stuff from when she was undercover,” Jase continued. “That can’t be real,” said Lizz. “What do you mean?” “That stuff would be highly encrypted. Not even Xank could break it.”

I worked retail for longer than I care to think about. This will accomplish nothing other than making the workers' lives even more miserable than they already are (and if they're working retail, their lives are already miserable).
