St Nicholas was the bishop of Myra is in Turkey. He was unaware that north or South America existed. For him, Gibraltar was the westernmost edge of the world. The limes germanicus, around the Danube river, represented the frontier and north of that was essentially terra incognito.

Oh that's so nice to hear, thank you! Mythopedia is a beautiful book for mythology, as is Mythologica. Emily Hawkin's A Natural History of... series is lovely for fairies and mythical creatures. But best of all is that a fourth Lore of is coming so please watch this space!
