I was on a train once where the brand-new conductor was desperately trying to pronounce 'Schenectady' and it did not go well.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Re: interview footage circulating today - Pritzker said exactly the same thing nearly a year ago. More depressing is that he felt that he *had* to say exactly the same thing nearly a year ago.

The right energy from Gov Prtizker - would love to see this from every Dem Gov in deep blue states. www.politico.com/live-updates...

A national political party could just send a bunch of electeds to Portland for a weekend to look around, with cameras following them. I mean, national news outlets could also do this, but OK.

this feels like the corollary to we need Mamdani in NYC and an oyster fisherman in Maine and a midwestern dad in Minnesota.

we're supposed to be the party that embraces the fact that we're a diverse and chaotic nation, stop test-polling yourself to generic national oatmeal!!!

It's interesting seeing the different ways resistance has formed in different cities. Los Angeles Organized, Chicago Radicalized, and Portland Got Weird as Fuck. All 3 have had success unifying their respective cities.

I guess my point is there are multiple paths to ungovernability.

I love this take.

Also interested to see what Philly will come up with. . . [grinning ear to ear because I kinda already know]

Wow, that's interesting. Now I'm *really* curious. Thanks for replying about this.

The Bethlehem fanclub says YES! We want to read this book! [ok, confession - it did not occur to me that there were lots of white evangelicals in the unions here, but I'm really curious now]

p.s. our local blast furnaces on the cover!

New book: It's an ethnography of white evangelicals in a union in Bethlehem, PA, and Black evangelicals in a number of churches in Moncure, NC. Ken notes that while his subjects view God as an authority, so too did they consider their union and labor contracts too. cc @davidmislin.bsky.social

And I'm angry that this is practically invisible in the US media.
The sloppy equation of "professor teaches about X" and "professor believes X" isn't new, but the level and intensity of the harassment is. This is distressing.

A Rutgers professor has been forced to flee the country for his safety, after targeting by a far-right student group that was *checks notes* claiming they felt unsafe.

I'm horrified.
I'm angry.

@bkindivisible.bsky.social members also folded the incredible @meganpiont.bsky.social's awesome "How to Report ICE" zine for distribution!

Helpful to recall that as governor, Kristi Noem was banned from nearly 20% of her own state by its Indigenous nations because of the racist things she said.

The head of Homeland Security, complaining about a US CITIZEN doing the NFL halftime show.

This could lead one to think their (alleged) anger about “illegal aliens” is really just naked racism.

Anyway, props to the NFL for its America First policy of getting Americans to sing at halftime.
patriottakes.bsky.social
Kristi Noem’s message to the NFL for selecting Bad Bunny for the halftime show:

“The NFL sucks and we’ll win and God will bless us and we’ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day and they won’t be able to sleep at night because they don’t know what they believe…”

"No! That's German. . . for 'The Bart, The.'"

[which I still cackle over, every time I read anything that starts with the word 'Die'].

what's the stupidest/randomest Simpsons quote that lives in your head rent free? Mine is the urge to say "you said go to bread" every time I am about to head to bed.

Thread w/sources.

Many of us get a hard sell from admin on how the research profile of the uni will depend on "leveraging" AI. Priorities for funding will be those who play along.

As for using it in classrooms: it's nice to be old enough that I can pretend I "don't understand" and therefore can't.

OpenAI's rapid rush into education has been achieved by habituating users through training programs, institutional lock-ins, strategic marketing partnerships, and third party integrations that together are helping it become infrastructural to teaching and learning. It's going to be hard to get out.

Our university's legal department would flail us if we attempted to bring a speaker with a partisan agenda to campus (the university was sued in 2004 when an invited speaker yelled "Vote Kerry!" - admittedly, that was during a campaign). We can't even have partisan student groups address our classes

j f****** christ. This agent needs to be held accountable for this (I know, I know). If he's this violent with so many cameras on him, it's disturbing to imagine what he does when no one is filming him.

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)

This was literally my first thought, and the fact that it wasn't Hegseth's *second* thought after having this very, very stupid idea is deeply worrying.

I remember when Hugo Chávez stood in front of the UN General Assembly and called George W. Bush the devil and thinking that that was a low point in the diplomatic norms of the organization. . .

This speech is such an extraordinary combination of lies, delusions, narcissism, hatefulness, ignorance and lunacy that it could have been given by no other person than the president of the United States. It could well be the low point of US public diplomacy in our history.
