Let me say it out loud -
virtually all the scenarios I am familiar with (Svalbard, Finnmark, Gotland, Utens-Dauganspils-Ignalina, Brest-Siedlce-Minsk Mazowiecki-Warsaw, even Suwalki) are scenarios that are a real, absolutely realistic threats after the war in Ukraine is over.
While Russia is suffering horrendous casualties in Ukraine and failing by most metrics, European states perceive it as an existential threat—and are frantically preparing for an attack.

In my new piece for @foreignpolicy.com, I make sense of this paradox.

A Russia-NATO War Would Look Nothing Like Ukraine
Moscow will seek to avoid a full-on war and focus on breaking the bloc’s resolve.

Latest piece in @theatlantic.com Partly inspired by Signal scandal. Here we have Trump’s court speaking their uncensored views on Europe and Europeans should take them at their word. It might allow Europe to save itself, and save the USA in the process. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Europe Should Take the Trump Administration at Its Word
After following America’s lead for 80 years, the continent’s democracies do not recognize the danger now before them.

American govt representatives have been knocking on doors in Nuuk, Greenland during recent days to see if locals would like to be visited by the vice president's wife.

Everywhere the answer was the same: "No, thank you"

They are also considering scaling back a previously planned increase in force presence in Japan.

Honoured to have spoken on Silicon Curtain earlier today. Big heart out to Jonathan for a great conversation and warp-speed editing and release.
There's no question that Trump intends to impose a surrender of Ukraine to Russia's terms - their maximalist demands, with no pressure on Russia for concessions. @ehunterchristie.bsky.social - youtu.be/C9IHHv46tUk

The Mother of All Threads on Musk-Moscow collusion.
Essential reading.
34/ Musk did not turn on Ukraine, the EU, NATO—even the United Nations—organically.

He was _turned_—after he began jonesing to move his businesses into Russia (partly due to pandemic issues) and after he began having clandestine contacts with Putin.

From that point in, everything changed for Musk.

A poem by Eduardo Montes-Bradley

A Rider at the Oval

A stranger rode into the hall of power,
a weary traveler from a battered land.
He came not to beg, but to stand,
bearing the weight of his people's sorrow.

Yet cruelty met him at the door,
words like stones, cold and sharp,

This is clutching at straws at this point. Trump's hold on power is strong enough that he can pursue policies that voters don't want.
The real test is actual rebellion, from Republicans in Congress, from corporate donors, from right-wing media, from large numbers of Trump voters.
I don't see that.
➡️ 69% of US Republican primary voters said Russia is the aggressor
➡️ 60% would support ongoing weapons assistance under certain circumstances
➡️ 71% would support more aid for Ukraine when told Russia has kidnapped more than 19,000 Ukrainian children

Norway has hoarded its wartime windfall while Ukraine fights for Europe’s future — it’s time to pay up, write Håvard Halland and Knut Anton Mork in their op-ed.
Norway should cede its war windfall to Ukraine
Norway’s government has effectively become a war profiteer, we argued in a commentary in December. It is an opinion shared by a number of European politicians, and by European and Norwegian media. But...

The government in #Norway earned USD 114 billion in 2024, from extraordinary oil revenues due to the war in #Ukraine.

They give only 2% of this in support to ua, who are dying by the thousands to protect our democracy.

My criticism of this was just accepted in Politiken👇

"Dad, how could people want things to be so bad?"

"Well son, we used the internet mostly for porn and screaming our feelings. When it came time to look up things like "fascism" and "tariffs" I'm afraid it was a bridge too far for most."
