Russia is developing its military infrastructure and conducting organizational reforms near Nato’s northern flank, especially near Finland. News agencies from different countries have asked me about the topic, and in this thread I will share some recent observations. 1/

The U.S. has dropped to number 57. Wonder if Ukraine will surpass the U.S. in press freedom next year. 🤔
"Despite dropping one position since last year, Ukraine remains in the middle tier, reflecting relative resilience amid challenging wartime conditions.

Meanwhile, Russia continues its downward slide in the rankings and is now placed at 171st, close to the bottom of the list."
⚡ Ukraine now ranks 62nd in the new World Press Freedom Index—just ahead of Brazil, Japan, and Hungary.

Let me lay out the 2 sides:

🇷🇺 Russia doesn’t want Ukraine or Ukrainians to exist. They want to continue to kill Ukrainians and steal their land and children in order to make that happen.

🇺🇦 Ukraine doesn’t want any of that to happen.

Supply is starting to slowly recover, for now largely due to a slight pick up in imports. All nuclear/gas/coal (and a big chunk of renewables) still remain offline and likely won't return until demand can be safely ramped back up.

I agree with Minna…she’s smart and she’s right. Ukraine should not take a bad deal that doesnt meet their interests. They are actually winning on the battlefield, according to SACEUR Cavoli’s testimony in front of HASC and SASC…and the Russians will never live up to any agreement unless compelled.

To the argument that it’s not fair for 500 million Europeans to expect 340 million Americans to defend them from 140 Russians, one could say:

For most of the post-Cold War era, Americans weren’t defending Europeans from Russians. Europeans were supporting Americans in their wars in the Middle East.
An often overlooked aspect, on both sides of the Atlantic, of US military presence is Europe is that the US needs bases on the continent for global power projection.

@cepa.org is doing a public service with these interviews with ex-US generals explaining how exiting Europe will hurt America

Looking at what China stands to gain from the US self-sabotage shenanigans, it’s quite impressive: if China plays it smart, they can have Russia, Europe, and their Asian neighbours where they want them.

China is currently leading the race for the biggest winner of America's self-sabotage shenanigans.

49% renewable energy
24% nuclear

Only 28% fossil fuel 👍
Unthinkable just 10 years ago:

Almost 3/4 of the EU’s electricity in 2024 was from renewable energy sources and nuclear.

Gas and coal electricity generation is at record low levels.

As I keep saying, everything we can see suggests that the peace that the Trump administration are negotiating is between Russia and the US, not Russia and Ukraine. That will continue whether or not they stop trying to force Ukraine to hand over land to Russia and assets to the US.
