When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.

As you know, I take special delight in Minneapolis crabby patties complaining about protected bike lanes plowed before every street. But it occurred to me that a reason is, no one parks (legally) in a bike lane. In a sense, our protected lanes have the plowing ease of a suburban residential street.

Final update, Fair State Brewing is now done.
Dear members, It is with deep regret that we share this update regarding Fair State Brewing Cooperative. The Cooperative is no longer operating as a fully functioning business, which is why the board has not held an annual meeting or board elections this year. Following our Chapter 11 filing in 2024, the bank sold Fair State’s intellectual property, the Fair State Brewing brand, physical assets from the St. Paul production facility, and the majority of taproom assets to Ranchers Beverage Co. These items had been pledged as collateral for prior loans and were made available during the bankruptcy process. This transaction also ensured that many former cooperative employees would remain employed. Ranchers then funded the taproom to give the Cooperative an opportunity to rebuild and return to viability. Unfortunately, revenues this year have fallen short, and outstanding debts remain significant. With heavy hearts, we must inform you that the Cooperative and taproom will close its doors on Monday, December 8, so please come out by Sunday to have one last drink together. We are profoundly grateful to all of you who helped make this cooperative a vibrant and meaningful community, and to the taproom employees for all their hard work. Please continue to support local businesses with the same passion you brought to Fair State. Ranchers will provide further communication regarding the future of the Fair State brand, which will continue to be available. Thank you for everything, Fair State Brewing Cooperative Board of Directors

St. Paul Ward 7 council member Cheniqua Johnson Annan issued a statement last night:
Yesterday was an awful and heartbreaking day for the East Side & our entire city. No matter the explanations offered or the intentions behind events, the impact remains the same: trust between our community, our Saint Paul Police Department & the City has been broken. Yes, Trump's HSI & ICE federal agents once again set out to terrorize. This time, however, what I hear loud and clear is the community vocalizing their anger, pain, hurt & trauma due to actions taken today by officers of our SPPD. We must hear them. We must acknowledge that. Throughout the day & evening, I received countless messages, videos & emails from community members. Leaders, City employees, school staff & residents all voiced their frustration, disbelief, and pain at our Council's Truth-in-Taxation hearing. Driving to the scene yesterday, several of my colleagues encouraged me to turn around because, at 39 weeks pregnant, I was told the situation had escalated so severely that it would have been too dangerous for me and my son. How? How did it get that far? That is completely unacceptable. Our City has ordinances, and SPPD has policies and standards in place truly designed to protect all of our residents. We have handled many protests—many tough days for our city-that simply do not turn into what we saw on the East Side yesterday. That is why yesterday felt so devastating. So many of the things I have seen and heard are in complete conflict with all of that. Harm was felt, damage was done, and our community deserves clarity, accountability & reassurance that their city sees them and stands with them. This cannot be our new norm. My office will be joining my colleagues in seeking answers to the questions our community has raised. We will work to ensure that a thorough review is conducted and that, where appropriate, accountability follows. Our separation ordinance and use-of-force policies exist for a reason-they reflect our values as a city-and they must always be upheld. They are not optional.

Uber and Lyft are asset-light businesses, which means they don't have any financial incentive to limit fleet size.

If you own your fleet, you have to utilize it efficiently or lose money. If you don't your only incentive is to lower wait time by constantly trying to grow your supply side.
