My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

But it's so wild (but I guess should not be surprising) that we are having an extended cultural conversation about "AI" based not on what LLMs ARE but on the metaphor that we have all tacitly agreed to use for them because what they actually are is kind of difficult to, well, grok

Hotter take: we should legally be allowed to beat up people who willingly use GenAI and take their lunch money
Hot Take: We shouldn't normalize the use of GenAI, even if it's something small like placeholders, and saying it's okay because it was "only used for placeholders" sets a dangerous precedent that leads to more harm. Even if the use was "Small" we shouldn't let companies think it's okay to use GenAI.

There's a temptation for people from colonised countries to look at the US/UK in 2025 and say, you're just getting what the colonies got for centuries, but then you remember that poor people in the US/UK never got to share in the good stuff except for a brief post WW2 period which has now ended.

This article, which is essentially free advertising by the Irish Times for a tech company, contains their boast that their new legal AI has a "zero error rate" when answering questions about Irish law. Be afraid - be very afraid.

The reason I'm concerned about Maria Steen being on the ballot isn't that she will win (she won't).

My worry is that if she is nominated, it will mean a month of national airtime for a hate campaign against vulnerable groups, carried by a media too scared of being sued to call it what it is

There's no reason to take any reporting about Tyler Robinson at face value right now. Countless officials, law enforcement agencies, politicians, influencers, and reporters have been wrong, hoaxed, or caught making things up. Social media is making us all crazy and stupid.

I recently went to a McDonald’s where you don’t interact with anyone, you just go to a kiosk and then they put your order on a rack, and the thing that gets me is that nothing on the menu cost less because of it. No benefit for me! Doubt the people in the kitchen are getting paid better!
