This is getting lost: For weeks Trump officials had the option to remove Abrego Garcia to Costa Rica, but refused to do so. Instead they kept trying to send him somewhere more dangerous. Costa Rica wasn't cruel and dehumanizing enough.

This is deeply sick conduct.

The MAGA opposition to SNAP isn't about budget constraints ... it's about deciding who is worthy of mercy.

To the Christian, EVERY person is worthy of mercy. Every person has inherent limitless value. Every person is someone to love, in words and deed.

A corrupt, authoritarian government seizes an innocent man, tortures and jails him on trumped-up charges that change during a manipulated "legal" process. The prisoner is left at the mercy of dehumanizing politicians & jailers to do with what they please.

Holy Week then. America now.

JD Vance holds a JD from Yale Law (and so do I). Presumably, he knows that he is disregarding the law here, and being deceptive about the protections it affords. (1/6)

I cannot emphasize enough: without due process it is impossible to say whether someone has violated the law or not.
Due process is a basic guarantee of individual liberty.
Indiana Rep Spartz (R): “You violated the law, you are not entitled to due process.”

Dangerously ignorant. 🇺🇸

I'm no lawyer, but it seems like discussing war plans in Signal outside a SCIF is maybe just a little bit worse than using a private server to send emails that weren't even marked as classified. But what do I know.

At least a dozen times in the Bible, Jesus is described as being “moved by compassion” to help someone in need.

I just can't imagine a scenario where we get to heaven and Jesus says...

"You were way too empathetic and compassionate. Don’t you know empathy is toxic?”

Honestly, if you think support for Ukraine is just an act of charity for a friendly nation, then you know nothing of foreign policy, American interests, or Putin's stated aims (along with China & others).

If you did understand, you'd get that WE should be thanking Ukraine, not the other way around!

Volodymyr Zelensky's Oval Office visit ended early when Donald Trump and JD Vance began angrily yelling at him. Here's why women like Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton are too emotional to be president.

All of that “I have respect for the office of the President” talk looks silly when the actual President of the United States has gone to such great lengths to show us that he has absolutely no respect for the office.

Notice how it’s always “the Bible must inform our laws!” until it comes to the verses about welcoming the immigrant, helping the poor, feeding the hungry, bringing healthcare to the sick, forgiving debts, not charging interest, caring for our planet, laying down our swords, or loving our neighbors.

This is an excellent breakdown of the core problems with the "sin of empathy" idea being pushed by various loud voices.
1/ LET'S TALK ABOUT: Selfishness, the Prosperity Gospel, and the Sin of Empathy.

The real problem with the idea of empathy "untethered from truth and reality" being a sin ... isn't the asinine bastardization of Friedman, nor is it the silly paranoid fear someone will be "forced" to show empathy.

Trump and DOGE accused federal civil servants of fraud (with no evidence).

Meanwhile, they're halting enforcement of a foreign anti-bribery law, dropping criminal charges against Eric Adams, and pardoning a former governor who tried to sell Obama's Senate seat.

Hello?

This really gets to the heart of the matter.
It seems like so much damage in so many ways to so many people and there is nothing anyone can do to intervene. When a convicted felon can be the president, like what is law and order anyway?
Consider this: what kind of young law school graduate would want to become an Assistant U.S. Attorney in this Justice Dep’t? Will smart, hard working, ethical young lawyers want to join?
Probably not.
What impact will that have, over time, on the quality of justice? Significant.
