NEW: Ernst Tanner has built a powerhouse at the Philadelphia Union.

But my @us.theguardian.com investigation has shown wide-ranging allegations of misbehavior throughout his 7-year tenure.

Tanner denies the allegations, and was investigated by MLS this year.

On field quality improvement mitigates all concerns. I love this move. Now we will sell when buyers are spending, recruit from the same pool, open the season with a set roster, and young players get clean exits not mid season surprises. Timing lifts economics and the on field product for all.
MLS owners are *expected* to vote on flipping to fall-spring calendar at Thursday's BOG meeting. Changes to competition format also expected.

Let's see if it actually comes to a vote, but implications are enormous.

The man has managed in Barcelona, London and Paris and started his playing career at Newell's freaking Old Boys, I'm pretty gobsmacked at the idea that a few harsh takes from in and around the BroSo community got him this upset
This is also a joke - and has been the attitude of folks in American soccer circles for years. A critical press and fanbase will do much more to grow the game, and the national team, than a bunch of cheerleaders. F**k this “grow the game” narrative that’s been peddled for decades. Face the music.

In a closely divided Congress, aging lawmakers are a problem for Democrats
The last eight members of Congress who died in office were Democrats. A younger generation of office seekers has raised their opponent’s age as a significant issue in their campaigns.

Fantastic analysis. I’ll have more once the MLSPA releases salaries, but overall what the recent analyses of the U22 program have shown is:
1. Overall It hasn’t been profitable.
2. U22s take significant time to develop & many never do.
3. From an on field perspective it’s best used in domestics.
The supplemental roster was the focus of last month’s blog, with today’s topic being the U22 Initiative. Give it a read.

How do U22 Initiative players perform in their first season? What about later years? And what factors shape those trajectories?

Some stats from 100 days in on congestion pricing:
- Complaints about car-honking are down 70%
- The Holland Tunnel has 65% fewer delays at rush hour; time to get thru it is down 48%
- 6 million fewer cars
- Half as many traffic-related injuries
- 1.5 million more visitors to BIDs year over year
How Well Is Congestion Pricing Doing? Very.
One hundred days in, honking is down; bus speeds are up.

I find the sudden way in which this MLS calendar change storyline emerged to be Kinda Weird, plus I was summoned and have time before my 9am thing, so it's time for a crash course in how and why the #JLeague landed on its decision to switch to a fall-spring calendar from the 2026-27 season.
I’ve been saying this for a while now, but anyone looking at MLS’ potential calendar change should spend a lot of time looking at what went into the J.League’s (still ongoing) calendar change

This is really funny because after congestion pricing launched and the haters were instantly proved wrong — traffic really did go down, transit use really did go up — they clung to "well let's see the business receipts!" as a last resort. And now we know business receipts are through the roof!
