kinda weird how liens are harder to enforce if you insist on being paid in a paper check and not direct deposit, and always go to the bank and cash it instead of ever letting money hit your bank account

real weird. definitely nobody do that. too weird.

NEW: Organ tuners have been leaving temperature and humidity records in little-known books for decades. 🎹

They reveal how temperatures inside churches have changed over time due to climate change and increased heating.

A new scoop for The Reengineer!

Shaming rarely works on most people, so I will simply say: follow the facts, both scientific and economic, for they tell the same story:

The pandemic is far from over. SARS-CoV-2 is still spreading; COVID-19 is still disabling millions today. It's never too late to align one's conduct with reality.

Live in PDX? Like to garden? 👀
We depaved and planted trees at Vestal in 2025 as part of the big coalition effort to transform east PDX's 82nd St into a healthier and safer place for all people. I'm working very hard rn on rolling out Depave CARE CORPS to organize folks to tend the new greenspaces we're dropping around PDX

He should absolutely be fired by NYT for this. Major conflict of interest that he didn't disclose.

I want us to be very clear about what Trump is hoping to do re Reiner. He’s laying out a justification for murder in the name of defending Donald Trump. He’s declaring that deciding someone has “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is a legible reason to kill someone.

Some numbers for context.

~100 US people a year will die in mass shootings.

> 1000 will be shot by cops.

Mass shootings target everyone. Cop shootings, especially those of unarmed suspects, disproportionately target Black people.

None of this is necessary. We choose to live like this.

I LOVE UNIVERSAL PROGRAMS!

Portland can be the best and most affordable place in the nation to raise a family, through the power of preschool for all, Inner Eastside for All, and building out a complete all ages bicycle network.
Multnomah County expects its universal preschool program to see a significant boost in enrollment, starting next fall. On Thursday morning, the county announced plans to offer more than 7,400 Preschool for All seats to early education providers for the 2026-27 school year.

Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.

It's been truly remarkable to see the grand jury system actually act as a real line of defense.

Especially since--as I bet most non-lawyers don't know--the only legal person in the GJ room is the prosecutor: no defense, no judge.

There is NO place more favorable to the state. And they keep losing.
JUST IN: Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Snell just confirmed, at the prodding of U.S. Magistrate Judge Keri Holleb Hotaling, that this motion for dismissal followed a "no bill" from a grand jury.

That means the grand jury refused to indict.
U.S. prosecutors in Chicago are dropping another case tied to Operation Midway Blitz, "without prejudice."

It's USA v. Nathan Griffin. Below is the motion, followed by excerpts from the complaint.

The feds don't say why they're dropping it, but they had until today to secure an indictment.

1/4. The U.S. continues to be a place where people’s life experiences and outcomes differ dramatically by social positioning. How does that affect the way people make meaning of what is happening around them? Those questions guided this new paper. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Reminder that not only do library systems have physical media (& many also lend tools, electronics etc), your library card may give you access to streamers Kanopy and Hoopla. We just watched Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of The Rainmaker via a hoopla the other night. Pretty good!
“As prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”

Good on Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands. I’m sure they won’t be the last to announce a boycott.

One reason we failed in the past is bc we didn't build up popular opposition to the crimes, whether it's torture or drone-killing or even attacking Congress.

Now is the time to do that, not after Dems retake power.
If Democrats are ever in power again what’s going to happen is the idea of holding this administration accountable for breaking the law every single day is immediately going to be made out as the greater breach of the rules.

The New Deal wasn’t built on a promise that there would be “no ceiling” for the richest Americans.

Quite the opposite, in fact. FDR knew its politics could only work if he singled out the rich as villains and knew that its policies could only work if the rich paid their fair share in taxes.

1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.

So a while back I was commissioned to do short bios of various rock stars, and they were just about universally total psychopaths, with the huge exception of Freddie Mercury. A lovely man who did good by his wife, his lovers, and his cats.
Today (24 November) marks the passing of Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen. He remains regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.
