I don’t have books to sell (because magazines pay me upfront) but I do love being *read*

So, here’s a thread of my short fiction, available in text/audio for free:
I have a story coming out about this next year but uh yeah it's not a popular pairing is it (we know why)
Has this pairing ever been flipped? Where a man falls in love with a monster?

In a time of slop, AI or not, it’s time to lean into niche communities and odd work by passionate weirdos with well-honed clarity of intention and craft
This is so relevant to my day-to-day thinking at @hubcitypress.bsky.social. instead of being demoralized and saying, let AI do all the publishing work and pump out more slop to boost sales, our new focus is carefully curated + clearly human created. Hence the focus on short stories, novellas, etc.

it's truly fascinating to live in a time in which anti LGBT violence is rising again and somehow Interview With A Vampire, the gayest show ever filmed, is on the air and wildly popular

The only truly irreversible thing a trans child is likely to do is take their own life. "What if they do something irreversible?" actually means "theyre not allowed to make a decision!"

You cant undo or reverse any decision you make, you can simply change your mind later and handle the consequences

Stock on the stove, book on the couch, tea in my belly.

Yang Ji Tian Yuan 2006 Big Leaf Sheng from Verdant Tea.

Smelled like an autumn spice blend and had a delicious zing on the palate.

There is a post circulating on Bluesky encouraging the moving of a frozen turkey straight into a pot of hot oil. We are combating this misinformation the best way we know how - through the power of dance music.

Two observations:

1. The time change is brutal this year. Way too dark way too early.
2. I'm seeing much less Thanksgiving cooking/spending content than previous years.

Everything feels muted and dim.

one of the things that makes me most mad about genAI (and there are many) is we've been told there's not enough money for hiring. but there's billions poured into ai.

so not enough money to hire workers. but infinite money to pour into technology whose goal is never having to pay workers again.

That short stories exist in the cracks and interstices of the capitalist system is how you know they’re the superior form
Yeah, unfortunately. Outside the world of magazines, anthologies, and small presses sustained by obsessive volunteer labour, the capital-I industry rather does seem to find short stories an unwanted form electricliterature.com/i-love-short...
I Love Short Stories. Do I Have to Write a Novel? - Electric Literature
The publishing world’s insistence on the novel as default fails to imagine what a book can do

Your yearly reminder that “holiday” celebrations that only include Christian traditions are not, in fact, inclusive even if you don’t use the word Christmas, so tbh I’d rather you just say it’s Christmas.
Until a few years ago, ugly holiday sweaters didn’t exist. They’re ugly Christmas sweaters, with some generic Jewish iconography to be “inclusive.” But the truth is, when I have to buy one to wear to a work party, I feel like I’m in another culture’s drag.

Same with “voice”
It only took me until I was 40 to be like "ohhh my style is the process that feels like it flows the best for me and is replicable, that's it" could've saved so much time if I figured that out sooner.

In the grocery store lineup just now:

Old man: And how are you doing, young one?

Me: I'm good, thanks!

Old man: That's the way it should be.

Me: And what are you up to this evening?

Old man: Oh, watching movies.

Me: Hey, me too! Whatcha watching?

Old man: I like that paranormal shit.

The entire US economy is propped up by a product so toxic and insidious that everyone has to go on a weekly scavenger hunt just to remove it from products they're already using.
heads up, gmail has a new setting automatically on that allows their a*i to be trained on your emails so make sure to turn off the 'Smart Feature' checkbox in your settings

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.
