Hi all, I got diagnosed with leukemia back in January, and I decided to start a Substack to detail my journey, from diagnosis through treatment.

The first post is available now: johnshuntington.substack.com/p/so-howd-yo...

I would be honored if you would read it.
So, how'd you find out?
My journey through the Leuking Glass.

"I asked Chat GPT"

Well we asked an expert and then we asked other experts in that field to review the first expert's work.

One of the best jazz shows I've ever been to was the Duke Ellington Orchestra. I was in college and a total metalhead with a soft spot for jazz, and man, they blew me away.

sometimes i watch classic hollywood films — this happened recently with HIGH NOON — and i think, “yeah i get it, this whips.” i’m having a similar experience with music right now and specifically the work of duke ellington. i’m listening to the man’s work and i’m like, “yeah, this stuff is sick”

As a child of the Reagan years, the fact that the *Republican Party* is expropriating shares in companies and shaking companies down while saying stuff like this is wild

[new Isaac Chotiner interview]
But he got your crewmates killed?

I don't recall the details. He was a very magnetic person. He taught me a lot about whales. I don’t know anyone who showed that level of curiosity.

Well, next time someone brings up a terrible anecdote about The Pequod I will definitely drop the "whale facts" thing to show that people have two sides.

Yeah.

Pretty neat distillation of why it's dangerous to let companies consolidate control over TV stations.

This just in from Sinclair: "Beginning Tuesday night Sinclair will be preempting 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show's potential return."

A lot of Democrats have spent so long punching left that it's become instinct. They can't even grasp that there's another path.

nobody can possibly predict what the labor market is going to look like over the next 40 years, it's impossible. better to get some broadly useful mental skills, and that will be a lot easier if it's something you're interested in like history, literature, etc

"Research, valuable not in itself but for some ulterior purpose, will be of little import except in so far as it is transmuted into common knowledge. The history that lies inert in unread books does no work in the world."

When academics sit at universities and publish highly researched academic monographs that few read, we are responsible for the destruction of our field for not engaging the public. When we engage with the public, we are betraying our scholarly mission and so are responsible for our destruction.

The history profession is in free fall, but its members can write liberal briefs that are cited in dissents to conservative decisions. Doesn’t seem like a great deal all told.

I was struck by the importance of rhetoric recently when reading about the Space Race. JFK's soaring rhetoric about space and its endless possibilities helped create the political will for putting a man on the moon.

This is excellent from Ganz. I agree wholeheartedly. We need leaders who excite and inspire with their rhetoric, not who try to campaign by solely sifting through the chicken bones of polling data.
From Ganz's piece: "The statistical fixation of the early 21st century that’s made so many bad predictions and fathered so many puzzling defeats must be abandoned. We are not in an era of small calculations but of great movements. Politicians with a vision and a strong, clear rhetorical appeal, like Trump, Bernie, AOC, and now Mamdani, are those who excite people. People become disappointed and disillusioned when they lapse into focus-group-tested canting. Say something for a change."

OH! Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin is incredible. One of my absolute favorite sci-fi books.

It's also sort of autobiographical, but it's the first book that popped into my head.

Crucial to the pronatalist worldview is the reality that children are only considered desirable so far as those children and their care needs can be used to constrain women’s dignity and prospects.
