I mostly still listen to records end-to-end, and as far as that goes Scott Hirsch had my favorite of 2025. “When Things Fall Apart” was the song ringing through my head all year long. Very worth a deep dive into his catalog.

Looks like, as @sndrnvia.bsky.social had hoped, at the end of 2025 Sounders' Stefan Frei did overtake Nick Rimando for All Comps appearances for a single Major League Soccer team (not counting Friendlies).

🗣️ WE’VE GOT PAUL ROTHROCK ‼️
December 29, 2025 at 10:02 PM
There were 5 college players (4 Superdraft) who started for Sounders vs Miami in Leagues Cup final and won. I’d say more of a long play than we typically think about with a u22 who you want to flip but your 2026 Superdraft could be a big factor in a 2030 trophy win if you play your cards right!
There are more college soccer players who started in the MLS conference semi-finals than u22 initiative players. Including several young guys! The MLS super draft is unironically still more important than the u22 program.

In 2025 DSC succeeded while being protected by a regimented back five who was engaging in low-possession soccer. Going to be a whole different ball game next year playing in a high-possession system with way less protection.
💣🇨🇦 BREAKING: Inter Miami is nearing a deal to sign Canadian int'l GK Dayne St. Clair, per sources.

St. Clair, 28, just was named MLS GK of the Year.

Huge signing for Miami, who just won MLS Cup.

I enjoyed this. I have fed the beast to be sure. On purely a soccer basis Paul proved to everyone he is a starter and it now seems he has to go elsewhere to realize that role. Sometimes it’s “just business.” Just feels like a mistake on so many fronts to let him go.

This is wonderful. Have never once heard an official name for the guy laying down behind the wall. In my house we’ve christened that role “Cleat Meat.”

I love this intel from Niko. I’m not a Bruce guy but if Bruce wants you that has weight. The narrative just keeps getting juicier.
I'm told that Paul Rothrock is in advanced conversations with the San Jose Earthquakes & all though there are a couple of other clubs still interested, #Quakes74 is currently the front runner.

The #Sounders haven't closed the door on Rothrock but ultimately is up to the player.

I think about the Rothrock contract saga much like the Josh Naylor contract situation with the Mariners. In a way that maybe defies convention he was a key ingredient in his team reaching a critical sporting mass for the first time in a long time. The people want him as a franchise player for it.

One interesting contrast between Whitecaps & Miami ahead of this MLS Cup Final is how much Vancouver rely on Superdraft Picks (White, Johnson, Blackmon) & Homegrowns (Berhalter, Priso, Nelson, + Ahmed came up through Whitecaps II) while Miami are very much not that.

The year is 2025. 2 of the 3 eligible hosts have substandard pitch situations for a possible MLS Cup Final. So does the lowest ranked remaining team…
With the MLS conference finals now set, the potential matchups for the Dec. 6 final are:

San Diego at Miami
Vancouver at Miami
NYC at San Diego
NYC at Vancouver

Two things can be true:
- Lloris has historically had a bad time at BC Place so comes off a complainer
- His comments 100% needed to be said.

If we really engage with it:
- Both teams were slipping way too much
- VAN were down to 9 men at the end because of the turf monster

It was conspicuous.

Whitecaps have lived and died by the margins in 2025:

- advanced twice on away goals in CCC, almost three times but for a 90+1 second leg goal
- advanced twice now in MLS Cup playoffs on a shootout after a draw

Missing Berhalter in CCC Final was a disaster. Will missing Blackmon be the same?

Buttoning up the 2025 MLS Season and including Round 1 minutes, Sounders ended on 69% of their minutes played by Americans. Crazy to consider that based on what we know so far about long term injuries and declined options and players waiting in the wings this number could rise again next year...

Ten minutes of watching zero off-ball movement and zero coordinated defending will tell you there is no “system” to speak of (or to defend for that matter). “Goblin-mode” is not repeatable tactics. Not the look of a “team.” Fory’s sub getting the red card was chefs kiss. Liability FC.
Quotes from Phil Neville postgame:

“It wasn’t about a system or a tactic it was mentality… that’s on me we need to be better.”

“There has to be massive Improvements to everything we do.”

“We picked players that were 100% and rewarded players that played on Saturday”

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

Sounder came through it and turned the tables. Jesus has been doing so much good work. Minnesota looked tired already at minute 35. Gonna be a long one for them.
MNUFC has been stingy in the first 45' during the MLS regular season. Sounders have also been stingy to start except for a strangely shaky final 15' of the first half. With teams starting to tire ending that first half is also MNUFC's strongest scoring period. Maybe the most important 15' tomorrow?

One of the untold stories of the Brian Schmetzer-era Sounders is the degree to which he has had to chop-and-change lineups in the regular season and still peaks 50 points almost every year. Dusted off one of my slightly busy pandemic era graphics to help show 2025's contrast 2024 & 2023.
